Had the same thing on an old SEAT Ibiza, was the coilpack for me
Didn't Vauxhalls of that era come with a 7-year warranty? If so, it shouldn't cost you anything to fix...
There is however water at the bottom of fuel tanks, its very occasionally a problem on bikes that have been stood with half empty tanks for a long time. Condensation sinks under the petrol then gets into the float bowls.
Its clearly not the problem here, but suspect thats the origin of the myth.

The idea that running a car to empty somehow stirs up crud is bogus though since the fuel pickup is at the bottom of the tank, so any crud will be immediately picked up regardless of fuel level.
I think most supermarkets legal dept would like a word with you about that a statement. We for one totally disagree with that entire statement and my own 1991 and 1994 cars both run on supermarket fuel regularly and have done historically. As have my rally cars. (Let's not forget Tesco sell some very good high octane fuel.)
It's time please me-yeah, for your posts to improve in quality please, with more fact and less imagination.
Fuel filters in cars exist for a reason, and they should be changed regularly. I have personally cut many of them open and they are, on the whole, very clean inside. Yes some dirt arrives but it's pretty minimal.

Most fuel tanks are barely 6 inches tall in total, so I'm not sure how the pickup could be that high...
Either way, the fuel pickup doesn't move so the fuel is taken from the same part of the tank regardless of fill level, and so any crud would either be completely missed or picked up straight away, not when the tank is empty.

depends if the fuel tank is on the bottom or the side, and whether you have a hothatch, SUV, 4x4, pickup, jeep, saloon, the fuel tank makes trunk square and hide wheel arches sometimes
modern fuel tanks made out of plastic are normally like this
