No, it's a discussion where people get to define things like "best", and for that matter "small" according to their needs.
This may not, and I'd guess is not intended to, produce the definitive list of "best" or "small" cars, but would be pretty effective at showing what people regard best and small to mean.
For instance, while I might be able to pick what the best small car for me might be, I'd pick according to MY needs, which doesn't necessarily make it the best for you. My choice might be a Polo 1.4, because I want a modest-sized reliable town runaround still capable of comfortable but legal motorway cruising. You might still pick the Polo, but go for a GTI type engine, because you want to hoon around like a nutter in it. Hooning around like a nutter in a small car doesn't interest me - I have an M3 for that.
My "best" is best for me, for my reasons.
The 500 is a Panda isn't it? Underneath its trendy Starbucks pumpkin spiced latte disguise... I'm a bit miffed I missed out the four wheel drive Panda from my list though. That's so good it should have been mine.
The Corsa gets props from me because I learned to drive in one and have been in and out of a couple since. Anything run by a private driving instructor has to be tough as old boots, dependable and cheap to mend. The thing never missed a beat while I was learning either so I can't knock it there. Everything in the cabin and the engine bay was simple, made sense and was where you expected it to be and while it might be lacking 10/20% in the "feel" category versus a Fiesta I found they handled nicely enough and inspired a reasonable amount of confidence at speed.
you're cute.. I think we'll keep you around.
Yes I love an open thread on this subject BECAUSE it's an open subject.
If I closed it off, as you suggest, with references to get meanings, I would have to have used references such as Fiesta or Panda and that impacts the reaction.
Instead I got exactly what I wanted. A varied and diverse selection of answers and in doing do I got EXACTLY what I wanted , but I cant tell you waht that is as it would take an eternity to explain.
clever huh?
besides.. it has been a good thread

Ofcourse im cute and . . . sexy too . . . lol
Glad you don't take it personal but . . .
A good thread? In the sense of what, there is no discussion, for discussion you need a framework which is missing here.
You mean to say that this topic has no direction and the only intention is forum filling?
For me, It looks like a schoolyard where all boys talk loud about their own visions without coming together.
You got what you wanted you say. I guess you wanted this forum became bit more alive and bit more dynamic.
Because this forum is not very large neither active.
With the right framework it could have been an excellent subject for serious discussion.
More worth than forum filling . . . .
you're a proper charmer aren't you? a real people person
Welcome back
I shall give you a hint as to the value this thread gave.. rather than allowing you to sit up on that tall horse on the high hill and look down at we minions milling around in the mud.
Which brand cars were mentioned last. Which brands were mentioned first? And which brands surprised you in their arrival in the thread?
------
If however the HEXUS community is not large enough nor alive enough for you .. I must whole heartedly apologise and promise that we, the great unwashed will strive for a more active and forum for you.
If you'd care to lead us with your greatness though, and point us to the error of our ways, I for one would follow you into war, pestilence or death. How better can we arrange this or any other forum?
Because you're a top top person - and I value your feedback .. IF it's constructive and works.

I'd hardly say meaningless.
It is interesting to see what people's individual requirements are in considering what is 'best' for them.
Of course there is no such thing as best. If there was, that would be the only car ever sold. If you were looking at the best small car for a wheelchair bound person, it would almost certainly be the Citroen Berlingo. If the choice was on appearance or styling, that car might not feature at all (although styling is subjective)
If the OP had been asking for advice, the thread would have been something like "which small car offers the best performance (or value for money, or load carrying ability). But it wasn't, it was asking for people opinions on what they thought was the best small car (obviously it would be helpful if people said WHY they chose a particular car)
It has also been interesting to see what features certain small cars have.
Of course open ended questions can lead to single word answers, that are no use at all (other than to the poster who might be spamming to increase his post count, but then we have ways of dealing with that )
Hope that helps explain the purpose of the thread.

The thread served it's purpose, to get people's opinions on what THEY think is the best small car.
My 2p's worth, the current Eco Boost Fiesta's. My own personal car is Corsa, but recently drove an Eco Boost Fiesta as a hire car and have to say probably the best small car I've driven in the last few years (Have driven my own Corsa, a newer Corsa, a DS3 - wasn't keen on this and the Fiesta) so have had a tiny bit of variety.
The only problem with the current fiesta is the interior. It's the standard ford 'you know it'll drop to bits and squeek in 5 years time' style
Hard to guarantee any make is free from that these days. Audi are supposedly the best in the business but mine creaks at a precise point - cold mornings when the first layer of interior is warmed up but the rest isn't yet - the temp differential is causing quite a few creaks. Sadly it's un-testable because the dealer doesn't open early enough in the morning to catch the condition and they won't fix what they can't reproduce. Even more sadly my every day commute does
my wife starting car hunting the other day for her first car after passing - something she could practice in and wouldn't matter if she dints it. So last night she asked me if we could go and look at a Jaguar. No, seriously. I hate to see what the expensive option would look like.
