    Snow 2017 :-)

    Lo drivers and riders

    At last... SNOW

My missus and I did 200+ miles yesterday cross country from Shropshire through Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Oxon etc to Berkshire and then up to Bucks. Never touched a motorway, only used a dual carriageway for 10 miles, and used a lot of A and B roads thick with the good stuff.

Subaru Forester... utterly utterly awesome. In every way. Almost boring tbh.

The only major issue with having a proper car for this weather... no one else does ;-) .

Joking apart, the Audi quattro brigade were struggling on the summer tyres everywhere, and as I proved this morning.....

A 19 year old Polo with cheap All Seasons goes most places

Best advice for Snow driving? If you're really scared, just don't do it. Nothin worse than the 2 mile hold up caused by the one terrified Nissan Duke driver this am, knuckles whiter than the snow around, grimace of terror, sat further forward than at any point in their driving history, body literally shivering with fright, doing 5mpm down a gritted dual carriageway as each car had to overtake on the clear sections. No matter how imortant the journey, it's not worth that level of horror. And you're not safe.

For the rest of you please be careful, but mildly confident. Slow wins, but not at a crawl when the tarmac is visible and it's just wet slush 10 feet to the side.

Snow? What snow? There may have been the odd slightly-more-solid raindrop hitting my windscreen this morning but that's about it.

yeah, we got snow. And it's snowing all day out my way, but where the office is? Najda, just much rain. So an early get up and I got in before the trains got too messed up (always pays to watch the weather forecast the night before), but getting home could well be interesting! Got the emergency toothbrush with me, just in case.

You can't be in the proper North, then, I assume?
Up in the proper North, where I'm from, we simply whine about Winter coming and how the Wildlings and White Walkers will breach The Wall near Castle Black!!

Coat? Meh. Was tramping round town yesterday in a hoodie. Don't see what all the fuss is about.

Been a long time since I drove through proper snow; in fact, it was the winter immediately after I passed my test - that one about 10 years ago when the entire country south of Birmingham ground to a halt for several days. The motorways were a bit unpleasant: there was lots of work going on, and passing lorries in narrow lanes with a blizzard in your face is a bit harrowing when oyu've only been driving 6 months! All good experience though, innit

So I have a flu at the moment. Apparently everyone is all the time exchanging inactive virus particles, all the time. They are not a problem almost all the time. If your internal temperature comes down to around 31-32 degrees C (from 37 ish normal) they can actually become active and cause you a flu / try to take over your body / bug you in general. So you want to avoid (for example) your lungs getting to 31 degrees C at all costs.

So there's that. Wrap up warm!

Don't know where you were in Berks yesterday but you're dead right about the Audi Quattro brigade. Just outside of Newbury town centre, in the morning the A339 & A34 were icy & slushy, really nasty and I saw the aftermath of two accidents, one the car was straddling the barrier, the other in the deep ditch at the side of the road. Both cars were Quattros of some description (A6 & A4 I think), both probably had the wrong tyres on.

I tried shovelling the snow off my drive yesterday, but the drive is quite steep and I had summer shoes on so couldn't get any grip. No I don't drive a Quattro

Edit: I should have gone in and changed to some decent winter boots, but I stayed indoors and played Elite instead. It was cold out there

no indicaton... just drove into it.

I got out to help him but he said he lives closed and was goinbg to "rock it " out

I watched for a while, offered help, he said no, so I left.

Any of those 3 a black A4 or A3, didn't mention that one as I couldn't tell if it was a Quattro as I saw it in the rear view mirror. Literally drove off the side off the side of a straight slip road on the A34 towards Chievley. I think Quattro drivers think they're impervious to road conditions due to 4wd, little realising it's all about the tyres on the vehicle.

Just spent a chilly 2hours at Preston Station waiting for cancelled/delayed trains. On my way now, second half of the trip is from Birmingham to Southampton by car, but I’m expecting the M40 and A34 to be clear.
