Well, the Pacific coastline of California has at least one significant difference to Scotland. Scotland can be beautiful when the sun breaks through but also spends a fair bit of the year being a bit .... soggy .... for me. That said, New Zealand apparently is a bit that way inclined.

    Ah, Tuscany .... sigh.

Besides ..... Bolognaise, Pizza, and a veritable feast of delights, .... versus Haggis. Apologies to Scots, but .... ' uff said.

Now if Italy would just be so kind as to leave the EU too, I can put them back on my list. Sadly, I doubt my holiday preferences are sufficient incentive. Maybe, judging by the state of their economy, if I promused to buy an Alfa too?

    Just kidding, Italy.

Where are you people all going that you actually see rain in Scotland??!!
Are you sure you're going North far enough and not accidentally ending up in the Lake District?
I've never once seen rain in Scotland... I get the impression I ought to feel cheated, somehow...!

    's wrong wit' haggis??!!
I could understand if you'd said shortbread, as I hate the stuff, but haggis... proper haggis is absolutely divine!

As for Italian food, yeah it's nice enough and one of my staple faves, but I'll see that and raise you black pudding, white pudding, Scottish salmon, porridge, buttery tatty scones and lorne sausage.

You forgot square sausage and Scotch Pies. Mind you, you can probably get all of that in Gregg's in Newcastle, no need to get your passport out.

Ummm, well, pass on haggis black puddjng, even white pudding and not even a fan of porridge. Tatty scones? Point taken.

And proper Scottish salmon? Okaym you got me there. Food of the Gods, and tops even a really good tag/bol .... even when the pasta IS properly salted.

As for rain in Scotland, I remember going to the Edinburgh tattoo years ago. We sat there covered in raincoats, brollies, plastic bags, angthing to try to keep dry, and couldn't have got any wetter if I'd jumped in a swimming pool and floated there for 6 hours. We were drenched, every inch, foot to head. It p...p....poured, non stop, unrelentingly, for hours.

So, a couoke of years later we had a 2-week break in and around Aviemore. It started raining more or less ar we crossed the border, and we spent a week with non-stop heavy rain. We even went up ski-lifts to walk down ... in the rain.

Ultimately, there's only do much ice-skating and curling we can stand in one holiday. So .... after a full week of non-stop rain we gave up and drove down to my grand-mothers for the 2nd week .... in Cornwall near Penzance. It was as far away as we could get.

I'm surprised the SNP need independence. I'd have thought that, by now, like an old fence post, Scotland would have rotted at the joint and drifted off into the north sea by now.

PS. Before anyone says I'm anti-Scottish, I can (and we have) traced my Scottish ancestry back to the 12/13th Century.

Last thing on my list, as I saved the best for last.

Scotch Pie has questionable heritage and lineage, along with things like Bangers & Mash and Fish & Chips that were thought to have originated in Scotland, before becoming ubiquitous throughout the English speaking world.

Thing is... I hate fish, generally.
A couple I like, mainly haddock or cod, but salmon is especially disgusting... except when it was pulled out of a loch 40 yards away that very morning, whereupon it becomes magically amazing.

Well, the rule for fish, generally, is the frexher the better. Best I've ever had I caught myself, line-fishing off the rocks in Cornwall.

Short of that, friends live in Grimsby and meeting the boats as they dock and buying, say, cod directly from the trawler, 10 ins back home and 20 mins to prep and cook, that's pretty special too. Sadly, I don't get the chance to do either very often.

All told, I don't eat any fish as often as I should, and your typical local chip shop fish ranges from okay if the shop is really good, to dire if it isn't.

My worst fish experience has to be Sushimi in a geisha house in Kyoto. I'm sure it was an excellent example of the craft, but for me, large chunks of raw fish is an acquired taste I just haven't acquired. Fortunately, it was accompanied by copious quantities of a rather good Sake, and that is definitely a taste I have acquired. Kampei.

But fresh salmon? Yum. Thin-sliced, of course, and suitably accompanied? Yum. And, a good fish propetly smoked (none of that 'orrible psinted on yellow muck, but properly artisan-smoked? Scrumptious. Hell, I'll even go for tinned salmon in a sandwich, but that artificial faux-smoked? Nah. Give it to the cat. If it'll touch it.

    I mean, yes.

I've tried a deep fried Mars Bar, on a visit home with an American friend I wanted to impress/inebriate/impregnate. 9/10, would try again. 11/10 with rice.

Any chance the big companies like Honda change their mind IF brexit does not happen? Or happens in a way that won't impact trade as much (soft brexit)? I must say as a young PhD student, I am pretty terrified about my future in the UK...
