Was on the list- I like the older ones but I'm not confident in their 4x4, as they don't have a diff lock and no require afair bit of front slip before the rear kick in. OK on roads, but not so good in mud and forest

My neighbours have this massive toyota thing. Seems to behave itself. When I was in NZ I hired a big car that turned out to be a Toyata Rav4. I was pleasantly surprised and would happily get one based on that experience with it.

I'd not go that route - reliability now is... risky. I can't justify the size either. They DO have awesome ground clearance though

They seem quite good value, recent ones are supposed to be cheap to insure as well. Kia seem to be running a scrappage scheme, so you could get £2500 for that old Octavia.

THey are very good, yes. And they were short list along with the larger Sorento. But no...

omg we had a suzuki hire car in Tasmania, It wasn't great. Mainly, and I hope this was a hire car defect vs the norm, it tried to kill us going down steep hills where the automatic transmission kept trying to jump up gears and taking away all engine braking, and you had to wear the brakes out to combat it. I am very glad we didn't have to do those hairpins in the wet. I'm not sure we'd still be here to talk about it. The rav4 was a dream by comparison.

Every Lada dealer had a queue outside every Monday, of Russians paying £50 for the old part exchanges and the Riva's and driving them back home
