I have become quite understanding of the police recently, and really agree on a lot of stuff they do (As seen in the little 'debate' with Coco ) But this really does not have an excuse, you cannot clear this guy and then ban or jail the general public for similar situations. If you want to test a car like this out, get on a track, a runway, a private area that is built for these sort of things.

Once again, I will tow the line: "One rule for them sometimes, another rule for everyone else."

The car wasn't standard and was modified for police high speed work. Was just on the news. Unsure of what exactly but prob the usual remapped engine, brake upgrade, suspension upgrade and other goodies such as strengthing and lightening

    I just read he did 84 in a 30 not just 159 in a 70

159 is bad enough, but 84 in a 30 is worse, what if I kid stepped out ? Oh nothing, he would be going too fast to see the kids brain splatter over the pavement

Got let off ey? He should be banged up, next we will see professional arsonists getting let off for testing out their new box of swan 20's, or serial rapists getting let off cos there good in bed, whatever next

The thing is - its all very well saying - it had upgraded brakes, the guys safe to do 200 in a 20 yadda yadda yadda. But the fact is, in a single emergency stop, standard brakes will cope, its tyres and the cars weight that matter (and to a lesser extent, suspension).

Even standard brakes can lock up the wheels from 80-0 (thats why we NEED abs isnt it?) So he still would have ran straight through that child that was in the middle of the road even with his upgraded brakes. The only real reason you need to upgrade your brakes is if your doing continuous hard braking from high speeds (i.e race track work) for that single emergency stop, all that really matters is tyres, and the wieght of the car. Now with all of the electrig gibbery crap they put in cop cars nowadays, it probably wieghs more than a standard vectra, and thus, it probably doesnt brake any better.

the thing is there are private road layouts - the crash test lab in crowthorne has one - where you can blat about in a car without dangering anyone. they have everything there.. high speed loop, propper road layouts, speed bumps, blind corners.. the perfect place to test a car out.

hmm that coppas forum seems to say its legal, ok its not against speeding laws, but imagine this.

i go out one day, with say a big rod that shoots out lightning (or some other device not covered by firearms/knife laws). i start waving it around, nearly killing people. surely i'd go to jail? i mean, whats the difference? taking driving out of the equasion, i was still recklessly endangering peoples lives

and hte 'testing the car' excuse doesnt explain the 30 limit stuff. if you want to see if your car can do 85, whats wrong with a motorway? wanna test emergency stops and turns at that speed? motorway - its wide enough. why use a 30 limit?

The law states that if his duty is hindered by the speed limits, then they do not apply. So what official police duty was he on?

Seeing how fast his new motor could go. Literally, that's what he was doing. No joke.

This is a blatant mis-justice - can it be taken to a european court or a higher court? can the public lodge a complaint somewhere? Flippin rediculous!

Just try this: "Er sorry officer, I was just testing out my new car, I do have an advanced driving course you know... and one day I may need to make a citizens arrest..." as if they'll let you off!

No he was testing his car to see if he could drive it at 85 in a 30.

Having now established that his car is now capable of such speeds he can now drive safe in the knowledge that should a crime ever occur at 2.30 in the morning he can get there at nearly 3 times the speed limit.

Also the Police Tactical Firearms squad will be shortly practicing shooting at targets in extremely close proximity to the public in the local shopping centre in order to familiarise themselves with their newly issued Heckler & Koch MP5s.

After reading the 5ive-o postings i have lost all respect for the police force, doing that speed in a 30 is just stupid, if it was one of us we would have been fined & banned and maybe jail!

Sad fact is, the Police are allowed to drive at whatever speed they feel is necessary. The law states that.

It doesn't mean it's right though... But the judge had little choice but to let the guy off. The Judge has to work within the law, and the law states the Police can drive as fast as they like. The Judge can't make up law on the spot to suit...

I agree Police should train at very, very high speed, and I also agree that in certain cases a race track or proving ground isn't appropriate. However the guy shouldn't of been doing 80+ in a 30.. Never in a month of Sundays. Also, this "training run" should have to be pre-approved and very closely monitored. The Police shouldn't be able to pick up a new car, and go thrash the nuts off it just for kicks.

Best course of action - write to the Home Secretary and tell him what a load of b*****ks this whole farce is.

Section 87 Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984

No statuatory provision imposing a speed limit on a motor vehicle shall apply to any vehicle on an occasion when it is being used for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes if the observance of that provision would be likely to hinder the use of the vehicle for the purpose for which it is being used on that occasion.
Yet that Ambulance driver was doing 100mph while delivering organs almost lost his job, license and stuff...

    Work that one out.....
