Persoanlly I think just use regualr. I think in terms of cost, for the extra you pay for optimax, you could do the total milage anyway on regular unleaded. But I think it might be psycological, my car does have a bit of va-va vooooooooooooooommmmmmmm with optimax!

I've never in my life used anything else than normal unleaded.

If you've got a knock sensor you may notice an improvement I suppose. In many cases, the car's set for 95RON whatever.

As for optimax - my motor hates it.

My MR2 is fine down to 91 RON according to the manual. Makes me wonder if I shouldn't advance the timing a smidge.

Ahh yes, the great premium petrol scam... let me find some links to the sites that have comprehensively proven that these 'performance' fuel really make 0.00000001% difference in performance and engine life span (even in high fairly performance engines)...

(if anyone else can find any of the research please save me the bother)

I belive I can feel the jump when using better than 95RON despite my engine being totally set for 95 (says in the manual you'll not feel any more).

But I could swear it pinks a little on 85 (mind you, at 10.2:1 it's quite a high compression engine for an old car).

Gonna make a difference on some things (particuly those vehicles with knock sensors etc etc) but in a lot of cases it's a psychological thing and clever advertising.
