    S10 From the Colonies

I needed a truck, nothing fancy just something to pick up the odd piece of drywall, plywood and lumber for the home projects. Well I couldn't just build and run anything so here is part 1 of what I did on my summer vacation.

2000 S10 LS, big 2.2, auto just in case the bride needs to use it, Belltech components to give a 3" in front and 5" in back lowing, custom 2 1/2" cat back exhaust, Air Hog filter (yes I know it's a Fram but the price was right), 18" Boss rims and Kumho ECSTA Supra 712 245 x 40, shaved , decked, M3 sport mirrors, roll pan. Stock stereo CD, add 400 watt amp and 10" autobahn sub woofer.

The other addition is a 1995 Cherokee that my son purchased up in Duluth for school. He cocooned the Del Sol for the winter. So far just added an Alpine CD unit, 320 watt amp, and a single 10" sub woofer, Accel cap, rotor, 8mm silicone wires and Accel plugs. Soon to get a new cat back and in spring 3" lift. Now he just has to keep the grades up at Michigan Tech and off the Jeep/Del Sol for awhile.

Here's my fugly '04 BMW 530i SE Auto. It's fairly well loaded with satnav, xenons, 6-speed auto, leather, climate control, HiFi, chrome exhaust tips, auto-lights and rain-sensing wipers. It's got a straight-six 3.0 litre engine. In terms of performance it accelerates about as fast as my previous Boxster (around 6.6 seconds) which isn't bad for a fairly heavy car. Not very sporty but good for those long motorway journeys.

I got it as a nearly new car (6-months old) from my local BMW dealer. It was actually the service managers car so I guess it would have been fairly well looked after. It's fairly poor on fuel consumption giving me around 21MPG on average if I stick leave the gearbox in auto mode. If I use Drive Sport mode or manual shift then I get around 15MPG!

It's going in for a major software update next week and i've been told that it may take up two days to update the software!!!

I know, they're taking the mickey. I wonder if they're still using old serial ports at 9600 baud?

By the way, it's also got Supagard paintwork protection and run-flat tyres with tyre pressure sensors. The rears are 275x18x35, the fronts are 245x18x40. They're a bit of a pain compared to normal tyres as they introduce more road into the cabin and the pressure warning system does go off with false alarms a bit too often. However, you can still drive for around 100 miles with a puncture at reasonable speeds on the motorway.

If I go to BMW then the rears are just over £300 each (including fitting). If I go to a Blackcircles fitter (where I used to get my Boxster tyres from - highly recommended by the way) then I can get them for around £245 each (including fitting). I've had to have one replaced last Summer that had a nail in it. It really hurt my wallet!

But the car has BMW Service Inclusive which is all service maintenance (parts and labour) for 5 years or 60,000 miles so i've got no service costs whatsoever. The warranty runs out in Jan 2007 so i'll be flogging it by then.

My biggest costs are tyres and fuel (around £100 per week at the moment). I only get back 15p per mile for business use from my company so I end up making a loss on business trips if I use the car.
