    Exhausts

    Hi all.

My car is due an MOT on the 11th and it needs some work doing to the exhuast to get it through. Now, as I have VERY few pennies I need to do this as cheaply as possible. Any ideas?

I think it's the back box that has a hole in.

The car is a 1989 VW Golf GTi.

    Thanks luvvies! X

Get down a local scrapyard and get one?. Failing that, if it is just the backbox it probably wouldn't be too expensive from a local motor factors...both options assuming you can fit it yourself?.

I'm hoping to fit it myself. It can't be difficult! The problem I may have now is finding a mk2 golf in a scrap yard with a suitable exhaust. Will it just be a standard exhaust do you know?

So long as it's gas tight, yes.

You'd be amazed what can be achieved using coke cans, Exhaust puttty, duct tape and steel wire.

Preparation is everything - Exhaust putty sticks best to clean metal.

So speaks a man who has some experience in forcing cars through MOTs?

I was at a VW breakers yesterday and bought a door handle for a fiver and asked about exhausts while I was there. He'll do each section for £20 a time. I'm hoping that it's only 1 section needs doing.

I will look at making it gas tight with random objects such as coke cans, sticky backed plastic and fairy bottles.

    Thanks for your help guys.

my exhast at the moment.. notice the baked bean tins holding it together.

you can get backbox repair kits from halfords - just make sure you make it air tight - or a 2nd hand backbox (check ebay) might do

Well, an MOT, despite what most people think, is technically valid for seconds. As soon as the car leaves the test station, it can be voided. I've had people swap their "skinny get you through the MOT test" wheels and tyres back to their "humongous, foul on on everything" wheels in the car park whilst I was writing their ticket out.

If you can afford to, replace the entire thing; If not, a decent bodge is just that; Buys you enough time to save a quid for a proper replacement.

If you can weld, you can just weld a bit of tin over the hole in the back box, although if its well rusty, this is more of an art - welding on rust...

I'd be dubious about just putting a bandage on it for the MOT.

It failed the MOT, however it wasn't the exhaust it failed on! I bandaged it up and it would have gone through had it not been for those pesky brakes! Brake compensator leaking, excessive corrosion on the rear brake pipes, too much play on a ball joint and a couple of minor things too.

Can't afford to fix it at the minute, so I've SORNed it. WIll fix it by myself when I get the cash. The garage wanted 511 quid to fix it
I'll do it myself for under 200.
