Yup, it depreciated like crazy *then* I bought it for £17,000 less than it cost new just 4 years old.

    Next please?

Only in terms of 'image' and 'perceived ability' which is luckily how most people buy their cars and helps with the depreciation

Alfa 147 > old shape Mondeo > The Bus > a garage full of imaginary Audi RS4s, RS6s, and cabriolets.

A high NCAP score is great if it actually supports the buying decision you want to make

find me an alpha of the same age as a mondeo that costs less..

your car is STILL depreciating like crazy. you spent what, 3 grand on it a year ago? I bought a newer model for under a grand 6 months ago..

£17,000 depreciation in 4 years seems like an awful alot.

Some of the comments you've made in relation to crash worthiness of cars are accurate but other comments you've made are very misleading, not least by way of omission. I think it would have been better to have mentioned the full range of factors that contribute towards crash worthiness, otherwise your comments come across as slightly blinkered.

so if you base your car-buying on that premise (buy the car which depreciates most) you'll end up with a better car? that logic is clearly flawed...

NCAP is good to read and good to know about.

It is NOT the be all and endall, BUT a 3 star is pretty poor in the modern world.

The story of manufacturers getting 4 star and not 5 for not having a seatbelt warning light are, as far as Iknow, true! But I'd still rather be in a 5star car, light and all, than a 3 star polythene bag on wheels.

You CAN be hit from the front...and it COULD be your own fault.

But best of all.......5star cars often have deformable dash, softer pedal, with pedal release, better column movement, front wheels and hubs that come away in a big crash and the ONLY way a car would get my money with 5 stars and not 3 is if it was for JUST ME...and was gorgeous!

As soon as my frioends and family are driving it, they need better, cos they might screw up! And I want them home after acrash, not in a box.

So...if this car is for other people too....buy the highest NCAP you can get. It's better, long term.

No, I spend £2.5k on it 2 and a half years ago I'm pretty sure yours is not newer, its the same age (V plate?) and is an LX..

I never said buy the car which depreciates the most, it was a comeback to a comment somebody else made

It is an awful lot - very bad news for the first owner, but somewhat better news for its second..

If you think my comments are misleading then please do feel free to straighten them out - I believe them to be accurate, if I'm wrong, I'd be grateful of being informed

Still at least 1K5 down in a a couple of years. Depreciation is utterly mental to start with, yes, but it's still a lot later down the line.

It's worth about £1500 now, so £1000 in 2.5 years. I don't think thats really THAT much.

I reckon I'll lose less on it than I will on the so called 'excellent residuals' car which is replacing it.
