Are you forgeting about some of the motorways biggest users? Trucks? The majority are currently limited to 60mph, and quite rightly to - 32 tons of truck would take some stopping from 90mph.

Build roads for lorries to do 60 on and leave the motorways for cars......

    Or, use the rail system.

    Yes.
They stop quicker. Remember Top Gear when they tested cars to see stopping distances. their conclusion was 'If you're gonna step in front of a car, do it in front of a Porsche'
    They handle better.
    They have more safety features.
Want me to think of more?

So, yeah, I am pretty clever! You don't seem to be though do ya?

Fantastic if they were being driven by computers. However, cars are driven by humans. Humans make mistakes.
You want safer roads then retrain the drivers before you think about upping speed limits.

Wake up and smell the coffee.... Build roads just for lorries? Why not ask to have roads built for people who have supercars and advanced driving licences? And use rail instead of Lorries? Yeah right - you ever taken a train anywhere? And what happens when the freight gets to the train station? It magics itself to it's destination?

The lorries from the station won't have to go on the motorway to get to it's destination from the local rail station!

Can anyone say PENDANTIC? You know the point I'm making!

Well, one of your points is:

    Faster cars are safer cars

    Not true.

the same car driven by different people can be the safest vehicle in the world, or the biggest killing machine yet invented.

Your second point seems to be that removing slower traffic from the roads would improve traffic flow.

Not true - that traffic has to go somewhere, if it doesn't travel on the motorways, it travelling somewhere else. Sure you'd get up the motorway quicker, but you'd just get to a bigger queue quicker.

Why would there be a queue? The slow drivers that cause queues woudn't be there....

I'm just trying to see if people have thought through all of the consequences of changing road patterns. I am prompting people for their arguments against the most common type of question, these are not neccesarily my views.

I am an engineer for a company that build equipment for the military all over the world. In my job you have to think about all of the consequences of changing something, no matter how small.

The changes referred to in this thread are not realistic and I am trying to prompt people into seeing this by arguing against the case I am posting.

As for the thick comment - I am VERY annoyed at your personal attack on me about this, especially when you don't know me! You need to realise that I am not posting my comments as serious views of my own, but to spark a well thought out reply. I would appreciate if you didn't do it again!

I dont want to turn this into a flame war, but surely things posted by YOU on the forum are your own views. I mean building seperate roads just for lorrys? Transporting all goods by train?
I appologise for the comment however it was out of line, maybe we should both think before posting

The whole point, I think, is to discuss views about events and ideas whether they be your own or someone elses. Sparking debate and discussion on things is what keeps things intersting.

If the rail system worked properly then putting the majority of goods on to trains would reduce traffic congestion immensly. But as we know the railways were sold to a private company to provide a quick buck for the government at the time. The system was not properly looked after by the company who owned the system. The system was not independently regulated properly and the whole thing went to pot. It wasn't properly thought out and now we have a big hole called the railways that is now a void for taxpayers cash.

Then the motorist is shafted for the congestion that all this caused.

Tell you what, shall we all vote Tory next time to see what else it'll cost us?

    PS - Apology accepted.

Erm, give me figures on this. I DOUBT this massively.
Infact i would go to the lenghts of saying that its more efficent to drive at ~2.5K RPM in 5th that any other gear. 2.5K in 5th on my car is just over 70mph.

Surely the peak power for your engine is when its most efficent?. Therefore that statement is so generic its pointless to say something like that.

lets keep this calm chaps there's no point getting personal with each other - remember be nice to each other.

i think if we were allowed to overtake in all lanes that might work, that way people who are always in the middle lane might prefer to be in the left lane rather than being undertaken all the time... also police could flash those signs at them saying "Move over to the left lane!"

Engines run most efficiently at certain speeds, the average being approx. 3000rpm (car engines this is!)

Different cars have different peak efficiency speeds. Also, these speeds change depending upon what gear you're in. (Engine speeds to avoid confusion)

Add to this gearing ratios etc and you'll find that the comment was a bit generic.
