New laws and more Draconian Punishment

Following a post on another forum I use someone suggested new limits and speeds to introduce:

20mph 300yds either side of a school etc with camera's. If you get nicked you loose your license for 1 month and a £500 fine regardless of ANYTHING

30mph in residential - if you get caught, 6 points £250 fine

no 40 mph limit - what a waste of effort

Single carriadge way 70mph limit - if you get caught £100 fine - no points until you go over 90 then 6 points

Dual carriageway and M Way - 90 limit £100 fine and 6 points if over 110

There would also be fines and points for a car doing less than 65 on the M way and less than 50 on a single lane.

EVERY car should be fitted with a residential speed limiter. They are no technology science anymore and should be fitted to every new car as standard. If you can fit sat nav you can fit one of these! It wouldnt be a auto thing, just a button on the steering wheel as in GP cars for the pits - paddle gearbox mate - nah, pit lane limiter!

    Also added was:

Driving with fog lights on when not foggy £50 on the spot fine, and automatic 6 points if caught 3 times in 12 month period.

Just wondering what the thoughts of people on here are:

    Agree or disagree...

and can you think of some more to add ?

Front fogs should be banned, they are a danger because they are dazzling. So far i'm agreein with you.

Re: New laws and more Draconian Punishment

NO 20mph limit outside schools, schools should not be on roads, kids should be walked to school or bussed to school, and should only be accessible if you are in a bus. I personally hate the school run thing.

Fine with 30mph limit, I do think some places have sensible needs for 40/50mph limits. Open long villages with houses on one side etc. No need for 30mph but no way a 70mph limit either.

Both single carriage way and M-way driving you go over 70mph or 90mph respectively points should be dished out straight away. Otherwise there is no point setting these speed limits.

Again I disagree with the 65mph minimum on a motorway, some people won't feel comfortable doing those speeds. The car speed limiter is a sensible idea but needs to be implemented in a sensible way to avoid any posibility of it kicking in at wrong time
    etc.

    YES to fog lights fines.

Personally tho i'm wondering what your underlying motivation is. I'm wondering if you just want to drive faster or make the roads safer?.

I'm much more of the idea a better motoring society would be brought about by re-testing everyone's driving ability every 3 years. I would say that it would stop people getting into bad habits.

    Good post tho

there was some kind of limiter things for speeds what was gonna be introducted when you went over a certain speed the petrol would be cut to the engine hence slowing you down, but i suppose that could kill your engine

    errr ? ? ?

That's roughly how cruise control works. Also rev limiters.....

Disagree with them all, especially the speed limiter because most people drive at sensible speeds through estates and past schools anyway. What happens if you're overtaking someone and suddenly a car turns onto the other side of the road and so you need to complete the manouver more quickly than you originally thought but you're stuck at 30mph?

99/100 drivers are good drivers in the sense that they don't go mad with the go-fast pedal at inappropriate times imo.

There would also be fines and points for a car doing less than 65 on the M way and less than 50 on a single lane.
I don't like that idea, what happens on a hairpin or a blind 90 corner? And what about cars that cant do 65mph?

There should be fines and stuff for pedal cyclists, if it was up to me anyone wearing day-glo yellow lycra and/or cycling right in the middle of the lane at 10mph should be fined.

You'd be allowed to slow for road conditions like hairpins.

Cars that can't do 65 shouldn't be on these types of roads then, for safety's sake. keeping the speed differential down is the answer to safety.

But then those cars wouldn't be able to go anywhere.

/I'd say a car with the guts to get out of a situation quickly is safer than something with a lawnmower engine, but driving faster is blatantly more dangerous. 70 would be suicidal on most nsl country roads and extremely hairy on many modern single carriageways, especially ones where there are loads of side roads turning onto it and stuff. Setting a minimum speed would be crazy, especially when you put things like icy roads and fog into the equation.

One that hasn't been mentioned yet......

People who drive in the middle lane on motorways for no reason should be shot. A little harsh but I think it's fair.

In the last week I've driven about 1500 miles mostly on motorways. I can't even begin to count the number of times I've had to cross 2 lanes to overtake someone in the middle lane when the left hand lane is clear for easily half a mile in front and behind.

Just to agree on the front foglights as well. Really annoys me, I used to wack main beam on to get my revenge but then one day I realised it made me no better than them. Now I just scowl at them. I think it's making a difference
