Air flow meters can be a prob on the 2.7 iirc. Damn good vehicle though, and no cambelt to worry about...Originally Posted by BenW

Grand Vitara is a bag of cat sh1t (sorry....but it is)
Freelander 1.8 is scarily good to drive and good on fuel too.
But Shogun is the daddy mate. Shogun all day long.
If you want summit serious and cheaper though.....Daihatsu Fourtrak (NOT Sportrack). That's why so many farmers have them.
And I love Shogun Pinins.....but that's cos I'm unusual in the head area (as you already yknow)

I'd say find something roughly appropriate at a dealership near you and let her test drive it. Maybe something that isn't exactly suitable so she doesn't want to buy it right away if she likes the way it drives. But if she doesn't like the way a 4x4 drives maybe she'll change her mind.
Tough on mirrors, tough on the causes of mirrors.
I feel compelled to respond to this being as 'she' is mentioned and 'her’ preferences discussed.
I am the other half and I would like to clear up a few things and make you all aware of a few details Tristen left out.
1. I do and have always appreciated 4x4 (Shoguns mainly reliable and retain their value) for there space and capability, no I couldn't fix it if it broke, no I don't know much about the engines but that’s what Trig likes doing, I am after all the girl so I do the bits he doesn’t like, like redecorating the house and helping out financially, including helping Trig get stuff for his two cars (that are both dead atm)
2. I do like the nice little things like interior and it looking half decent on the outside but not because I am a snotty cow but because I have to travel with my Job to exhibitions, visiting contacts and prospective clients so as much as I'd love to turn up in a old drive round the fields all day landy I wouldn't feel comfortable doing so.
3. My Dogs, who have filled the foot well of the vectra in a week are going to be at least 35k as informed by our vet. I have looked at estates, again have to be presentable, and the space just won't cut it. These are family dogs and will be traveling to Cornwall once a year for a holiday so space for them to relax on the way there as well as us lot getting all of our junk in is essential.
4. As I stated I am redecorating and we have had in total 3 skips at rufly £160.00 each, we also need to be able to transport Mr. mans track car around when he breaks it. So having a presentable, reliable and mainly spacious vehicle is what I feel we need, it needs to be able to tow a trailer or car and it needs to be LWB not short. As I have never owned one before I need help in deciding – which is where you lot come in……
I have looked around and have found that for low mileage and value for money a Grand Vitara is the best followed by the CRV, Free Lander and Shogun. Yes we only have 4-5 grand and we are pushing it but we have his two cars to pay for, the dogs and the house so I'm afraid that is the lot.
I really appreciate all your helpful feedback but please don't pay much attention to Trig he try’s to listen bless him but his brain switches off after a while because I have boobs and unfortunately they distract him and he misses the important bits.
Thanks again xx
I thought the boobs were the important bits.....Originally Posted by ELL

On a serious note you find me an estate that can do what I want and has the space I need then I would definately have a look, I am not dead set on a 4x4 but for what we/I need I just feel its the right option?
have a look at a volvo v70, and a a6 estate. both within your price range (i think) and both MASSIVE in the back, probably nicer inside than a 4x4 (at that pricerange) too. and old e-class estate would suit you too.. avoid anything classed as a 'lifestyle estate' - generally any small executive which has a big back - they are just square for 'style', not for actual capacity. if your budget cant stretch to the next size up (ie a6, 5 series, e-class) the best bet is a mondeo or a laguna, both are also massive in the back.. bigger than most 4x4s i know - certainly much bigger than a 'baby' 4x4.. if you want detailed boot sizes, have a look on the aa's review site (below) - they normally have all the specs.

oddball choice - would you be happy with the dogs in the back of a pickup? maybe with a cover roofy thing? that'd give em loooooadsa room..
hughlunnon@yahoo.com | I have sigs turned off..
Oh please, I've suggested an estate since the begining, your the one that wanted to know why I was so against a 4x4 and yet you were so against an estate...
Pick ups are awesome, can't afford one though and have to have four seats as I have a 3 yr old and Trig so need somewhere for them to go, did have a look at the removable back fronteras and free landers but bad overall reviews about those two so its a no go.Originally Posted by 5lab
Thanks for the AA link like I said I just want something that will do what we need be it a 4x4 or estate I'm not bothered, so ta.
Tristen how about you shut up and let the adult make a decision being as your last choice landed us stranded in Hayle on our first family holiday!

dont become one of those that just because they have a couple of dogs that they need to move a few times a year and have a child NEED to have a 4x4 its bs you dont ever need a 4x4 noone does, (unless) your house is so out of the way liie my previous was that only a 4x4 would get up there day in day out without breaking,or its your hobbie and you like dirt and testing them, in which case all of the above are not up to the job, as 5lab said just get an estate there is no need to join the ever growing trend of , i have a kid and a dog buy me an x5 its stupid.
and audi a6 estate would be plenty big enough, as would a volvo....
Perhaps read what I've posted?? I have never said I NEED a 4x4 my words were I thought it was the best option hence me being on here setting the record straight and asking for people opinions.Originally Posted by rainbow
btw these dogs will be taken out in the car/4x4 what ever, on a weekly maybe even daily basis. Yes cosmetically because I travel with work it has to be ok/nice.
Why not just tell me what you rate and leave out the rest, then I can go away and make an informed decision?

Keep an eye out for a crew cab one? 4 Doors, 4 seats and a pickup back.Originally Posted by ELL
