    Radar detectors

    Hi All,
I just got a reasonably fast powerful car. I am currently commuting 100 miles / day up and down the M3.

Can anyone recommend a decent radar/safety camera detector? I don't want to drive ludicrously fast, but 80-90 would be nice.....

The road angels are supposed to be pretty good, as they show up the speed that you are meant to be doing, aswell as giving you advanced warning of the speed cameras, and as such can be used everywhere, on your commute, round town etc)

The other option, if you've got, or ar looking to get a GPS system, is to sign up to one of the sites with Speed Camera Databases which you can then load onto your GPS, and set it to alert you

Otherwise, eyes are always good, and remember, it is unlikely that either of those will be 100% accurate - for example mobile speed cameras

Road Angel plus is one of the the best. Motion activated- picks up everything (has a radar detector aswel as gps) and tiff needell doing the voiceovers. Can be used on a bike or in the car- battery or cigarette lighter powered. Not cheap but the best never is.

To be honest, I never speed in town, and in any case I've got a garmin thing which I can set up to do static cameras. I'm only really interested in motorway protection, and that being the case, I need something which'll work on radar guns.

Sounds like the road angel might be the way forward....

    Cheers...

I've got a Road Angel Compact with the Laser detector add-on, and can recommend it if you want something small and simple.

It’s quite a small unit compared to the other Road Angel models, but does what I want it to do.

When it alerts you of a speed camera, it also tells you what the speed limit is on that road, and how far away you are from it. It also lets you know if you are approaching an accident black spot.

I managed to get the Laser Detector add-on for free, but have not yet been 'lasered', so have no idea how good it is. Chances are, if the laser alert goes off, your speed reading would have been checked already, so I wouldn't rely on that anyways. Another way of avoiding being nabbed by a gun is a jammer. But that’s a big no no. They are illegal, and if caught using one you'll be in big trouble.

The Talex units, although look quite dated, are also supposed be quite good too and are great value for money compared to other units out there.

I can't really comment on the other suggestions here as I have never used them, but I have heard good things about Tom Tom + Camera DB. I'll be having a play with that as soon as Tom Tom releases a version for Symbian v3 .

Oh yeah, eyes are meant to be quite good too
