    Radar Detectors

Has anyone actually got one? Do they work?

Especially with these new tracking cameras making a point (dubbed 'Specs) and apparently they don't even tell you you are being watched, was wondering if its worth getting one.

No I am not one for breaking speed limits before you all jump down my throat.

    I use an Origin B2.

    Rate it highly.

For SPECS, it will tell you when you approach each camera, and tell you how many in the series, ie 1/5, 2/5, 3/5, 4/5, 5/5 etc

Without going into speeding or anything, as you say, I'm surprised that these are actually legal. They must make a huge deficit for the cameras!

Why should the be made illegal? I thought the law was you had to know when cameras were present.

I think driving is becoming less enjoyable. We have to watch SO much now.

I believe the article says the ban will be for mobile camera detectors, not fixed camera detectors. You should know where the fixed ones are as they should be painted bright yellow, but I thought the whole point of mobile cameras was to catch unsuspecting speeders?

If speed cameras really are meant to slow people down, as opposed to raising money, I fail to see the reason for banning radar detectors and the like...

Probably because people will still speed whilst using them, only slowing down for cameras. Is that not obvious?

True but they ARE SUPPOSED to be placed at accident blackspots so anything that lets you know you are approaching an accident blackspot should be encouraged.

GPS Devices provide information only to the driver, and in no way inhibit the operation of the speed camera, therefore they are legal and unlikely to be banned in the near future, as it is dificult to legislate against something which merely provides information to drivers.

It is possible that radar detectors will be banned, this is a tiny inconvenience to Road-Angel / B2 owners as these devices are of limited use anyway and only a small function of the devices, if such a law was passed they can be hardware disabled so as not to detect radar signals and work only on GPS.

The banning of GPS detectors would be a massive undertaking for the government as this would cover all forms of satellite navigation/tracking and information systems.

Which is why, I presume, they won't do it. I can imagine the uproar by Sat Nav users being told they have to rely on a map again!

Exactly. My Road Angel also regularly warns me when I'm approaching an accident blackspot, I don't remember the last time it warned me of a camera in the same location.
