Focus-old fiesta similar price to a mondeo? Probably cheaper to insure.

nope, close, but i recon the mondeos a bit cheaper. you're probably right on insurance, but i'd recon theres less in it with a slow engine than you'd think

People often say this but in my experience it isn't the case, I am a student and have never been 'killed' on insurance despite owning a Xantia 1.9TD at college and a modified 2.0 Mondeo and later 530i Sport at Uni..

Buy sensibly (ie not something with a reputation for us young guys stacking it) and you'll be suprised what you can insure.

Quick question fox - who did you insure the Mondeo with - I've seen some rather nice ones, but atm the 2grand+ insurance cost is putting me off - I could have a CBR600 for the same (ie to buy it & insure it - as insurance is a hell of a lot cheaper)

From what I saw getting quoted for my first car, size of engine made only a minimal difference to premium, the main cost seesm to be being a young/new driver. TBH I think they're more worried about what you'll hit than what you drive as long as it's not a supercar.

rubbish, you try and insure a saxo vtr at 17, then try and insure a focus of the same insurance group and engine size, the differnce will be huge because saxos get smashed into walls all the time by young people and they get nicked alot too. the car makes huge differnce.

oops, didn't see that price level. You can get a focus for £1000, you'd be lucky to get a decent one though...

Well I'll go back to my Chavalier then. Was cheap to insure, cheap to run, and the TDi is a japanese Isuzu engine which was all-mechanical, no electronics to deal with on a breakdown. You'll get one in great condition for £600-700

What's did the Chavalier feel like to drive? I would have recommended a Mondeo but having driven my parents one for a while they did feel like quite big cars (not that that's a bad thing). I drive a Vectra for work quite often and that also feels like a big car, especially compared to an astra.

I've driven mondeo's and Vectras for work, and while the cavalier is not small, it feels a lot smaller than either of those ^^ Turning circle was actually tighter than my A3.

There are heaps of people doing stuff for the suspension/brakes/everything, just look at vauxhallownersnetwork (formally Cavweb.co.uk...). I was tempted, but didn't ever plan on having the car as long as I did (almost 3 years...)

The Tdi is not powerful, but it is torque-y, but people were always surprised with the go that I could get out of it.

Admiral. They are great, even if you have no NCB. Paid approx £1k at 20 for it. They now insure my 530i for about the same. Comprehensive.

Well that's nowt to do with engine size (which was my point if you'd bothered to read) and all to do with saxo's getting nicked a lot.
