    Dilemma?

    Hey,

About 2 weeks ago i went into the back of this womans car.... not hard..... there was just a scratch on the bumper.... Anyway.. the woman only took my phone number and im 95% sure she didnt get my reg number..... she said she'll ring me if we need to exchange details ??

2 weeks on... she rings me and says that i have damaged the boot aswell... and it will cost £900....

What should i do? I sure cannot afford that.. plus ive only just passed my test.... dont want to touch insurance either...

    Thanks

Ask to see the garage's quote and then let the insurance deal with it... Unless you have really really generous parents...

Would you want someone to do that to you?

    I'd go with Gumby's suggestion.

You hit her car, she is entitled to be compensated accordingly.
If you dont have the money then letnthe insurance company deal with it, thats what they are there for.

Agree with Gumby on this, get her garage reports and either pass to insurance company or just inform insurance co, let them deal and take the hit.

You should inform them even if you don't claim off them, otherwise they find out you've not told them they'll just invalidate your insurance anyway and you could be faced with a much larger bill than £900

£900 for what is probably a small scratch in the paint :/ she probably went to the most expensive garage for the quote. what car was it?

If you did just ignore her, then thats her fault for only getting your phone number, if its a mobile, then she deserves it.

You should tell your insurance company, although I didnt when I scratched a blokes bumper (plastic, didnt show - but it did deform the side of the bumper on mine, acctually looks better now I think )
The best thing to do is settle with a small amount of cash, I gave bloke £30. (if it is 100% your fault) since if you do that, then by law they cannot claim with insurance against you (although nothing to stop them claiming without giving any details of you). The thing I didnt see was that his car already had quite a few dents - a lot more than mine and its 2 years newer, but then it was more expensive to start with.

For now... i'll ignore her.... but if she does have my reg number... what can she do?

Wow, you're a real shining beacon of morality aren't you?

Well, given that the accident was your fault, and you didn't leave your name and address with her, then you've breached the requirements of road traffic act and if that's the situation there's always the possibility that the Police could get involved.

And if she or her insurers do eventually track you down, you'd better hope that you haven't invalidated your insurance policy by not reporting it.

I dont agree. If somone hits your car, and you are there, and get a phone number, then its your fault for not getting more details. There is no breach of the road traffic act here, unless he denied her that information (or unless she was not at the scene, but then i wouldnt leave anything more than a phone number on someones window) but from the story it sounds like she was there).

First thing you do at an accident (depending how bad it is) is get insurance details, or in the likely event they don't have them at the accident, you get everything you can (name/address/phone/plate/make,model and colour of car - incase plate is fake) + photos with a old film type camera (since digital pictures dont count as evidence for some reson)

she can give your plate to insurers and the police, who will both have/be able to get, your full details

Yeah, but equally I hate people who take the piss on insurance claims/ compensation on accidents etc.

If it really is an old banger, then trying to blag £900 is utterly taking the mick.

Cena, I'd phone your insurance company now and report it, and then give your details to the woman, and let them sort it out. If she does end up making a successful claim, it'll cost you more to renew next year, but I doubt it'd be £900 more.

Without wanting to put a fly in the ointment, it might be £900 more over the next 5 years though...

Still, I'd like to think that I would own up, since if I were in the situation I'd be livid if someone hit me and to be honest you should do the same.

Gonna lock it here cos I think the thread's served its purpose and I'm not keen where it could be going...

Blimey, there are some snakes in the world...

Be a man, take the call and get the insurance company involved.

They for sure aren't just going to hike out £900, they'll want three quotes etc etc.

Sure you can blame the woman for not taking all your details but she's got your number and you're now deliberately avoiding her.

You caused damage to her car, regardless of how much the damage will cost to replace or the value of the car, YOU damaged it, so just pick up the phone and sort it out.

How would you like it if someone damaged your car and avoided paying for it? Perhaps they hit you in a car park and left a note with phone number but never answered? Or, to really wind you up, they keyed your paintwork and left a number but then just laughed down the phone at you when you rang it...

I seriously worry over whether you should be on the road at all if this is your attitude... Suppose to knocked someone down, would you drive off and leave them there?

And don't tell me that knocking someone down is different to rear-ending a car... you've already demonstrated that you'll skive off paying the consequences if you can...

In short, if you want to drive be prepared to pay the consequences of your actions, if not, get off the road.
