I don't think there was every any doubt it would sell, after all Sony lead the market by a long way with the PS2 and the brand is still (despite Sony's efforts) very strong. Would the other consoles have done better with similar stock levels at launch? We'll never know. Have the competition gained siginificant ground this time around? Almost certainly. Will Sony eventually outsell their competitors with the PS3? Very likely.

It'll be more interesting to see how it does in the coming months - certainly sales aren't steller in the US from the last set of figures I saw. What happens when the PS faithful have got theirs?

lots of stock...look at the Wii

in the reports does it say how many pre-orders were placed in total? just curious about how it compares to the shop I work in

I know people have brand loyalty, but when people just post 'the 360 pwns' it does get tedious.

Its good that Sony managed to get so much stock in the UK. When you compare the number of consoles available in the UK compared to the Wii and 360 launches it certainly makes for a better buying experience. Although it does prevent large sums of money being made on eBay (no flaming).

As for the future of PS3 sales, I have no idea and dont really care at all to be honest. Ive not had a console for about 12 years. I hope that the 360, Wii and PS3 continue to battle it out as competition makes for a better consumer market in hardware and games on every platform, including PC.

Well everyone's entitled to an opinion - and the general feeling of malaise towards Sony is their own doing (and hardly shocking). It's worth remembering those stock levels were a result of not launching for months in Europe - it probably made it a whole lot easier for them, whilst making most of us feel like second-class customers (who then get to pay more than everyone else for a PS3 'redux'). If MS/Nintendo had travelled the same road then they'd be plenty of similar comments.

I've got an old XBOX - and that runs XBMC and nothing else (i'm not a fan of console games). I certainly don't plan on buying any of the new gen consoles, but as a fan of tech. toys i'm certainly interested in their relative merits.
