    Xbox - Is it reliable

I have read a lot about the Xbox blowing up or making excessive noise

The PS3 however gets better write ups

Yes the PS3 is more expensive & the games are dearer but if it doesn’t blow up it’s got to be better than a cheap Xbox on fire.

Not sure what to make out – I’ve read the forums & the newer versions of the Xbox are supposed to be quieter & the RRoD has been reduced!
As far as Blue ray goes it might win out but at least I’d have a few years on the DVD format until it disappears to the great Hi-Tech graveyard with Betamax & DAT

    So here is the question
    1) Have MS resolved the problem on newer models & not prone to red lighting anymore?
    2) Is the Elite a more reliable xbox or are they all iffy

    Cheers

    Mike

Re: Xbox - Is it reliable

Ive had mine from launch and still not a red ring yet (hugs wood).

There seems to be people that get the red rings when they have them stuffed in cabinets and what not my advice is let the console AND the power brick breathe more air than you if possible.

Re: Xbox - Is it reliable

I had my mates one for about two days until the dreaded red rings appeared.

Its a very good console when its working.

I have heard that they solved most of the problems with the new elite console - I think they are supposed to contain the new falcon boards.

Re: Xbox - Is it reliable

The Xbox360 is without doubt the least reliable and the worst built console in gaming history.

How many other consoles have there own pet names for the different sort of hardware cock-ups?

The PS3 looks better (although if this bothers you get the Elite), is quieter, and wont break as much. Shame there are no games really, or it would be worth buying one.

My Elite lasted 3 days before I got the red rings, so don't think it can't or will not break if you get one.

Re: Xbox - Is it reliable

Had mine a year no problems (touch wood) although the build quality leans toward laughable its a great console.

It does sound like a fighter jet (how is it possible to have a dvd drive that noisy!) however i have an excellent fix for it,
i crank up the volume on my amp works a treat .

Failure rate was 1 in 3 or there abouts at the time the RRoD was prevalent - Rather shocking, and Microsoft knew about the problem before unveiling the 360.

Have to say though, I bought one knowing they were unreliable and I am not sorry. Fire Gears of War up, Crackdown, Forza 2, Mass Effect, not to mention Geometry Wars and its just fantastic. Playing co-op with mates over XBL and formulating strategies via the headset is just ACE!

Re: Xbox - Is it reliable

I've got one that's a couple of years old. Noisy as hell, the only game I play on it freezes every hour or two and the DVD disc becomes unreadable randomly. But it's the games that make or break a console and the online gameplay. Xbox Live is amazing and i'd buy another Xbox despite all the niggles in the hardware.

Re: Xbox - Is it reliable

the noise is a non-issue. it's no noisier under load than a ps3 - but the optical drive *is* noisier

as for reliability? suckage, i'm afraid. the 360 is the second console to go screwy on me (the dreamcast had a bit of a reputation too, and deserved)

but given a choice between games and not, i choose games

Re: Xbox - Is it reliable

Great console, terrible reliability...i am on my fourth one after returns, repairs etc..gave up on my last one and bought another yesterday..am going to mod it with extra cooling this time.
The most common fault i gather is from the poor solder cracking over time due to excessive heat on the gpu.

I have got one of the first release Xbox 360's. Never had a problem with mine. Prefer it to a PS3 for range of games.

Re: Xbox - Is it reliable

My 360 last 10 months before giving up, perhaps it was something to do with it being the horizontal position - I keep it vertical now, I hope that'll be better.

Re: Xbox - Is it reliable

Simple answer is - no they are not reliable - well unless you count 30% faliure rate to be reliable....

... but we all put up with the unreliability becausen theyre just so darn good!

Re: Xbox - Is it reliable

360 is much more reliable now, just make sure you get one of the new chipsets and you will be fine.

Like most consoles before it (PS2) they all had there problems and well....this one just tended to overheat and sweat the red lights of death!
