Dont EVER use an after market cooler, they will more likely than not hinder air flow. The was one for the wii that actually drew more power than the whole wii console itself, showing the utter pointlessness of it. Try hoovering the top of the console, could just be dust build up causing the fans to come on stronger than normal.
NES, SNES, N64, GameCube, Wii, GBA, DS, PSone, PS2, PSP, PS3 60gb, XBOX, XBOX 360, Master System, Game Gear, Mega Drive, Saturn, Dreamcast, PC Engine, Neo Geo CD
tried that , my bros 40 gb is silent
should i contact sony??
I'd also say you should avoid any aftermarket cooler. It's designed to run cool enough by itself
The 40gb/60gb are two different machines, so they won't necessarily be comparable with regard to noise. I've read many reports that say the 40g/b runs cooler, hence it needs less ventilation slots and is less noisy.
My 60 is pretty quiet, but it does get noisier from time to time. Still not really as issue to me though, as the PS3 is pretty quiet even at full pelt in comparison to my 360 at idle

My 60 is noiser than my 40 when the fans are running. Just make sure there is a lot of air flow around the console, and that it is not encased in a cupboard or something while playing.
Both me and my brother have 40Gb consoles. His fans always spin up and are clearly audible because he has it in a cabinet. I have mine in a nice open area and I've never ever heard the fans spin up, even after gaming for hours.
It all depends on where you put it.
just put it behing plasma on top of cabinet , can here the fan after a lil while but not the boeing 747 take off thrust noise that i have been accoustomed to
I agree, its the luck of the draw regards if your PS3 is noisy or not....
