Talking The 'Upgrading your 360 HDD as cheap as possible' Thread

After the NXE launch i'm eager to upgrade my piddly 20GB HDD but can't justify the cost at this time of year. I thought I'd post where I've seen the cheapest options for anyone else who wants to do this. Some retailers are obviously more expensive but you might have vouchers/reward cards so they're listed anyway.

Bear in mind if you trade in your old HDD you need to backup your data before taking it instore! If you have no current storage be aware you can also get a memory card/HDD from Microsoft for free/a few quid http://www.xboxstorageupgrade.com/hh...entication.jsp

    Gamestation (instore):
Trade in Value of 20Gb HDD = £25
    New 120Gb HDD = £69.99 (cost £44.99 after trade-in)
    Used 120GB HDD = £59.99 (cost £34.99 after trade-in)
    New 60Gb Starter Pack = £59.99 (cost £34.99 after trade-in)
    Possible 10% student discount in-store.

    CEX:
Trade in Value of 20Gb HDD = £26
    Used 120Gb HDD = £80 (cost £54 after trade-in)

    Game.co.uk
    New 120GB HDD = £97.86 (+979 reward points) http://www.game.co.uk/Xbox360/Hardwa...s=120gb%20xbox
    New 60Gb Starter Pack = £58.71 http://www.game.co.uk/Xbox360/Hardwa...?s=60gb%20xbox

    Amazon.co.uk
    New 120GB HDD = from £84.64 http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-lis...9519477&sr=8-1
    Used 120Gb HDD = from £81.93 http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-lis...9519477&sr=8-1
    New 60Gb Starter Pack = from £58.71 http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-lis...9519477&sr=8-2

    Gameplay.co.uk
    New 120GB HDD = £97.86 (out of stock) http://shop.gameplay.co.uk/webstore/...uctcode=XT1197
    New 60Gb Starter Pack = £48.93 http://shop.gameplay.co.uk/webstore/...uctcode=XT1431

There's no way to use a normal sata drive no?

Excellent guide! I'll have a pop down to gamestation today to purchase a 120 GB drive! I might ask if I trade in whether they will be willing to transfer the data from my old drive to the replacement, I doubt it though..

If you have it in your purchase history you can redownload it....

And the 120gb HDD comes with the transfer kit to swap the data over, I have the cable....need to find the cd actually....

It's my save games I'm worried about backing up, would need to get a mem card as doubt the shop would transfer it for you when buying the new one. Also the 60Gbs don't come with a cable so that's a none starter straight away.

At £69.99 these aren't as bad a deal as they used to be (still overpriced though but what do you do?!)

Might give this a shot since the 120gb prices are outrageously high.

I wouldn't chance it. I agree the official upgrade is waaay to expensive but I wouldn't risk getting banned.

Re: The 'Upgrading your 360 HDD as cheap as possible' Thread

i have read in some forums you can buy a specfic type of normal drives and mod the hard drive to replace the existing smaller ones to 120gb, you are just modding the the hard drive you bought and flashing it with a firmware hack and putting it in the hard drive casing no need to mod the xbox 360. the official hard drives are a rip off anyways. i got a 1TB for £70 for my pc and they charge £70 for a 2.5 inch 120gb hd in a case?

I believe that it can still be detected (?) as the 120Gb drive has the ID of a 20gb (as i understand it anyway)

    And yes, they're a bloody rip-off!!!
