So what I the advantage of having Linux on there apart from a messenger program? Seems slot of effort for not much gain? Unless I am missing something. I am not being dismissive I just don't get it .
That is an excellent reason to install Linux, such a good reason I think I might insall it myself
But both Mame and SNES emulators work extremely well on even very old and slow PCs so I return to my original question.
What CAN you do on a PS3 with Linux that you can't do on a cheap old PC?
(If it's just the "because I can" reason then that's fine. There's nothing wrong with that)

im sorry to ask such a stupid question but what does the linux do
I recently tried YellowDogLinux and Ubuntu on my PS3 80GB, it proved to be very sluggish and terrible at playing video files. It'll be fine for Firefox / Pidgin.

Yes, there is a version of VLC that will run under a Linux operating system. In general you can't (easily) run applications designed for Windows on a Linux system, although some applications such as Firefox and VLC are available in versions that will run under either.
However, as others have posted here, performance may not be sparkling, but as Linux (and VLC are open source, you have nothing to lose by trying it.
I should add that it is not something I have tried, but others may be able to give you more advice.

I cant see the need for Linux on my PS3 as it sits right next to my Windows box anyway.
I wonder how well Linux + VirtualBox + Windows XP would run on the PS3 ... naa too much hassle!
