Thumbs up Does Anyone Use Linux on Ps3?

I was just wondering if anyone here has used linux on their ps3, I'm thinking about installing it but i have never used linux before.

So my question is, which version is the best?

Ideally I would like to use firefox, MSN/Ebuddy (I'm not sure if this is possible) etc.

Re: Does Anyone Use Linux on Ps3?

As far as I'm aware the Yellow Dog version is designed for it, so that's what I went for, but I quickly realised it was a waste of time and gave up. I installed it all without any problems, that was all fine, it's just a horrible platform to use as a computer.

I used to use Yelllow dog on the PS3 at release, Firefox works fine as it should, i don't use MSN and doubt very much the vanilla MSN would work on Linux? I use Pidgin for my messenger needs, its compatible with msn/google talk/Yahoo/AIM etc works on both Linux and Windows, give that a try.

Erm, yeah it'll be a pig to use. A relative of mine used to get the internet through his freeview box, and it was similar to using a mobile phone's internet capabilities, like peering through a keyhole with sunglasses on.

As for linux on PS3, tried it and realised that there was no way that it could handle the rendering of HDTV due to the way the gfx is handled within Linux and kicked it into touch.

Ahhh, reminds me of the AOL days... my only access to the internet for a long time was a couple of days a week AOL dial-up. I used to download files sometimes, put them onto one of my 10 floppy disks, then transfer them back home. If I'd known about split-archiving that would have helped a lot, I had a 1.44MB file size limit for any files I wanted off the net

Re: Does Anyone Use Linux on Ps3?

You won't be able to do it much longer anyway. The new slimline PS3 has had the ability to install other operating systems removed.

Apart from "because I can" can anyone give me a good reason why you would want to put Linux on a games console?
It seems totally pointless to me so I'm intrigued to hear what it can do that something like say a cheap PC can't.

True, I agree with you a 100%, but I suppose a cheap pc still costs money

Re: Does Anyone Use Linux on Ps3?

I was running Hardy Heron on my console and it was great especially when my rig was on the blink for a while. It was not perfect and plus the fact I never knew very much Linux language so even the most basic of tasks could be a chore.
I think it is still on my hard-drive somewhere but never used it again after my own PC got sorted. I am still sorry to hear they have taken the option out of the new model.

Re: Does Anyone Use Linux on Ps3?

Linux runs like a charm on my new Slim that got delivered early...
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

As Sony decided to not unlock the graphics chip for Linux on the PS3 what is the point really?

Re: Does Anyone Use Linux on Ps3?

Just had a call from a mate saying his fat PS3 has lost Linux support. Was happily running Yellow Dog until this morning but since applying the new firmware (3.0) it has been disabled with no way to re-install after a reset. Anyone else had their console gimped?
My only concern is should I hide my true identity? A costume maybe?

scaryjim: 10" is just a little large to hold comfortably in one hand, which makes it a lot harder to tap, swipe and generally interact with.
