The fan noise by the twin fans is a bit annoying.. is there any way of sound dampening from the outside without opening up the XBOX and voiding warranty?

Not that I can think of, at least not without hampering cooling performance. You could possibly use longer cables to move it further away if it's convenient.
However, if you bought an original model preowned, I doubt it has any warranty anyway and swapping out the fans for some better quality ones wouldn't be a huge job.
My 360 is sooo silent. I often forget it's even on.
Lol at thread title, no new Xbox's are silent and much sleeker than the older versions. Rumours are another Xbox 360 SKU is lauching after E3, called the Xbox 360 lite or something..
As others have said, the difference between the old 360 and the new 360 is massive in terms of fan noise. With the old 360 i could hear it when in another room, with the new one you can't hear it in the same room.
However, the cd noise is still quite loud, which is why all my games are installed.
Definitely much quieter, especially when loading from Hard Drive.
I remember seeing the trailer that said it was 'whisper quiet', that sparked a lot of raging customers.
Having wondered about the newer revision recently, I'm pleased to see this thread near the top of the first page.
To ask a slightly different question, are the new 360s much cooler? Die shrinks and fan changes would suggest so, but... well, it's best not to make assumptions! Though nowhere near the levels of my PC, I can at least reduce the ear attack by using USB sticks with my old-style console but that doesn't negate the heat it throws out. It's certainly not the most pleasing aspect of my gaming sessions at this time of year! Kinda useful in the cooler months though, so the glass isn't half-empty!
Well they use less power so will produce less heat; the newest one uses about half the power the original one did. However it still runs fairly hot, but there's nothing necessarily wrong with that, and it's a trade-off with cost/space/noise.
I now own a Corona (newer slim) console and it's far, far quieter than my Opus; I'm especially fussy about noise and while it's not silent, it's not annoying and the sound profile is much smoother than the Opus. Even the disc drive is far quieter, not that you should need to use it very often with a 250GB HDD. The DVD drive holds games at 12x CAV, about 7200rpm, so you can't really expect it to be silent; before anyone mentions the PS3, it's BD drive runs at 2x CAV so about 3200rpm, also falling slightly behind in terms of read speed and rotational latency.
Your wording has helped a lot, watercooled. "Silent" is one of those minor irritations I encounter daily, so it's nice to be able to grasp some context through your post. Those details are interesting too, by the way - partially because having used a then almost new first revision of the PS3, it didn't seem all that far off the 360 when it had been going for a while. Even starting the console up was nowhere near quiet, come to think of it. The qualities of the sound were different, but it was still loud and hot. It's interesting how people have described them in opposing ways over the years. Perhaps my aged ears aren't so bad and living in a quiet area and being used to building reasonably quiet PCs makes one appraise 'loud' and 'quiet' in another way.
Even if it seems to be at a glacial pace, it's good to see that things are moving the right way at least. It'll feel like a definite upgrade should a new 360 and a PS3 (finally!) join the fold.
Thanks for the answers!
A ticking watch is quiet, but I still find it very irritating if there's one next to me when I'm trying to go asleep. A central heating pump is significantly louder, but easily ignorable as it's a constant, smooth noise. Simply measuring something with a sound meter doesn't even begin to tell you how annoying it will be.
my 250gb xbox did but the kinect enabled one doesnt as much :///
They are a lot quieter but they seem to be quite a lot hotter than the last jasper Xbox.
Never had any problems, usually run them off the discs and still no issues - the humax box is noisier!
they are quite loud, but with the headphones on they aren't
Mine is not a new one and is very loud - it doesn't really bother me but on the positive side when the mrs is upstairs she might think I am doing the vacuuming rather than sneaking a quick game of FIFA!
