You still have wi-motes for pointer functionality, but it looks like there's tons of USP for the new controller - touch screen, facing camera etc.

Basically merge the wii with an ipad and you get this, but it'll be the way which they're used together (and with a main screen) that will make it work.

From what i have read it isn't out till next year, so will Sony and Microsoft have there next consoles ready to roll by then or make a surprise announcement of a stupidly powerful new console just as the Wii U gets released?

If its only as powerful as the 360 or PS3 and it's not out till next year and also does not upscale old Wii games i cannot see myself buying one but you never know.

Ah right - I must have missed this whilst skimming articles. Still leaves the door open for the successfuly party/accessible/bridge titles, as they were undoubtedly a hit with certain markets. I dont mean this as a negative though - personally I liked the wiimote.

No sign of replacements from Sony or MS just yet, so I think Nintendo have a clear window there. Would expect upscaling is trivial (though as usual, would give varying results).

If it plays/upscales DVDs, and has a decent web browser then I'm interested.

    Re: Wii U

There has already been talk of microsoft trying to connect their mobile/portable devices to the 360. As for sony well it wouldnt be hard for them to connect a PS Vita to a ps3, just like the Wii U

I know when i see all the various mario, zelda games running 1080p at Kameo\Banjo kazooie or higher level of graphics it will grab my interest a lot more.

Just gutted it does not seem it will be able to scale the older games to 1080p level so they will look blurry.

I do like the different directions Nintendo go in compared to PS3/360 its makes for much more interesting gaming styles.

I do hope that by the time it comes out it will play Bluray as well as DVD though.

    Re: Wii U

I'll probably get one just to play Mario games.

Apparently it uses it's own proprietary 25GB disks, so no Blu-Ray. It could mean they're planning some pretty big games if they think they need 25GB, I think the 360 only uses 8GB DVD's?

This. Though I am interested already. And even though part of me thinks that some of this is gimmicky, I just think that it seems less integral to the gaming experience than the wiimote was, so even if they churn out franchise games, I dont care. Maybe then they can concentrate on making great playing games/story rather than pandering to a certain play style.

I thought I would be more sceptical - but I want one already. Time to search for that Zelda-ish demo movie.

EDIT: Oh my god. Have to get one now. Saw the zelda vid here. It looks fantastic (Yes i know its a tech demo and not a game - but id put money on it being a release title). Please dear lord god just make it a great story again... Interesting that they showed that you can switch to playing the game in the touchscreen, as I thought they said it wasnt a HD one, but I guess it could just be downscaled.

I am a bit of a nostalgic Zelda fanboy (cant you tell) but if this is literally the only decent game for the system I will still buy it.

    Re: Wii U

Thanks for the Zelda demo movie link Jonathan, that looked amazing just wish the Wii U was out this year i do feel it would do very well at Xmas in sales.

Being released next year i just keep thinking it may be too late as they squeeze more and more out of the PS3\360 and the high chance of a new console announcement may hurt it quite a bit.

The controller looks way too big, and so expensive, loved the map or game swapping from the pad to the screen and vice-versa.

I love the Zelda games too.

All i know is that is going to be a very expensive console, in the back of my mind i know i will probably get one.

    Re: Wii U

I lost seriously faith in nintendo after they basically killed the wii off with all the bratz games.

The new console doesnt do much better... usually I dont want to be looking away from my screen when playing games. It takes away from the experience of the game on the screen and it will be poorly implemented for at least 1 year from when it comes out.

    Re: Wii U

I think they have announced it too early. Seeing as the graphics is exactly like the ps3/xbox 360. If they were to invest in the current AMD cayene architecture then would be able to compete with the next PS/Xbox that MS and Sony will announce in the next year or so. Nintendo are playing a risky game especially in this current climate lets just hope that they don't make any big losses come the Wii U launch

    Re: Wii U

Personally know will get one but how soon depends on the price. Looking forward to seeing mario and zelda games in hd.

But the console is a bit underwhelming. The touch screen control is a nice idea for some games, and being able to transfer the game to this and turn the tv over works in family environments.

Beyond that though, doesn't seem that much different to what the current wii is? Why didn't they just release the original in hd, its not as if it was new technology when it came out.

    Re: Wii U

It doesn't take much of a graphics chip to do 1080p these days, but Nintendo games do entertain me where others can't hold my interest due to it being based around real life and no where near real. In my view anyway, I have tired MW3 on a 6950 i7 and I can't get into it. Nice graphics but boring.

    Re: Wii U

Nintendo's first party titles are arguably much better than anybody else's (not a fanboy, as I've got a Wii, PS3 and XBox 360!), so games won't be a problem on a new console.

Still yet to be convinced this tablet thing will be anything more than a novelty - Aliens: Colonial Marines might be the one to change my mind though.
