Why dont HDTVs have DVI anymore?

    Hey all,

To cut a long story short my LG 32" LCD TV is now a write off as the HDMI was cream crackered. I have now been given half of what I paid for my original TV from Currys coverplan (robbing ba$74d5) which i am not very happy with at all. But none of the TVs in the store have DVI. Surely im well within my rights to decline any TV that isnt the EXACT specification of the one I bought originally, unless there is a reason why none of them have DVI?

    Anyone offer advice?

    Cheers,

HDMI is DVI with a different connector.

DVI does not carry sound though. Its just I have all of the DVI cables, hence why im not keen on swapping! Can you buy HDMI to DVI adaptors? The guy in the store showed me a DVI to HDMI connector, but siad they dont stock the others if they existed.

    Here are some.

It's unlikely you'd find a TV with a DVI connection these days as HDMI has become the standard digital connector for this segment.

Re: Why dont HDTVs have DVI anymore?

HDMI is, to many intents and purposes, DVI and SPDIF in one cable. for the sake of end-user simplicity, more and more tings just have HDMI on - one cable, job jobbed.

there are six ways to hook up HD video and multi-channel audio when doing the "separate cables" route:
    * Component video and Optical audio
    * Component video and Coaxial audio
    * Component video and Multi-channel analog audio
    * DVI video and Optical audio
    * DVI video and Coaxial audio
    * DVI video and Multi-channel analog audio

isn't a single cable that everyone uses - like USB, or SCART, preferable? think of HDMI as SCART 2.0. much like you can do with SCART, you can get adapters, but it doesn't take away from the fact that a single universal connector makes life easier for everyone

Re: Why dont HDTVs have DVI anymore?

My arguement with currys, however, is that they have given me 50% of what I have paid for the TV to get something which doesnt have the same connectors on it!

I paid a fortune for some decent quality DVI's so im not intent on changing. I used to put the PC through my HDMI until my HDMI packed in, so I paid a fortune for some decent quality DVI leads, which now I cant use. So surely they should give me the full whack of what I paid for the TV so I can get something equivalent, and also all of the necessary leads I require.

    Maybe im being too fussy,

    Cheers,

nothing new & decent's gonna have dvi on it

the most expensive telly they sell, a 63" samsung, has no dvi on it

    nor a 50" panasonic, 37" philips, or 42" pioneer

dvi on teevees is dead. it was only ever a short-term thing.

"Cabling4Less HDMI (Male) to DVI-D (Female) Adaptor" from the link provided by charleski will simply adapt your existing cables to hdmi.

Re: Why dont HDTVs have DVI anymore?

Well after arguing in Currys last night and getting nowhere I have ended up with ANOTHER LG, which doesnt have PIP or audio out on it. I was promised it was like for like apart from DVI, which im not going to argue over as the trend has moved away from DVI as you guys have said

So back to boxing it up and taking it back!

    Cheers
