Yeah - A good HiFi shop will let you listen to the stuff before you buy, sometimes even the exact one you could end up buying.
Theres a little shop near us called John Kirk, he's great, hes got a listening room upstairs and if you ring him a few days in advance he'll set up exacly what you want to listen to and you can go and take your own stuff and have a listen, compare it with whatever you want etc. ... its great. Recently my dad was thinking of buying some new speakers. He was more than happy to setup the Quad 22Ls, Wharfedale Opus floorstanders, with an Arcam C30 and some Marantz Power amps. He didn't buy them in the end but there more than happy todo it for you.
Often shops'll have a listening area with alot of different speakers, then have a huge switch box so you hear the gear off the shelf (so they don't have to move it) but the speakers will be properly positioned allready.
