    Surround sound system for PS3

Hi - I am new to this and this is my first post so please be gentle!

Could anyone please give me some advice on what 5.1 speaker and receiver to buy. Right now I have got a Playstation 3 which is hooked up with a HDMI cable to my 42 inch Sony 1080p TV.

I want one that is reliable and works with great compatibility with the PS3, my room is approximately 6m x 6m. Please take into account that the max I want to spend is £350-450.

When researching for myself I have read a lot of positive feedback on Jamo’s A102 series

To be honest, great compatibility with the PS3 is irrelevant. Use optical out on the PS3, make sure you get an AV Receiver that supports Optical in, everything will be fine.

If it's convenient for you, I would recommend popping down to the nearest Richer Sounds. Tell them what you want, and what your budget is, and see how things go. I'm not suggesting you buy it there and then, but it would be a great starting point to see what you can get.

It's not a huge budget, so you might have a fairly limited choice in terms of what you can get, but it would be good to get a feel of what's out there brand new. You might be better off in the end going for second hand, benefitting from people who've bought introductory systems at £600 or so, and now want to move onto something more expensive.

The only thing I would say is not to bother buying HDMI/Optical/etc cables in a shop, they're much cheaper off eBay or Amazon and quality is the same. Not necessarily true for speaker cable, but everything else is the case.

Point is, going in and having a look (and a listen) is probably much more productive than spending hours looking at reviews/forums/webshops/comments etc.

    Another thought would be this:

Loud and powerful, with an optical in. It's never going to be as good as a dedicated amp and speakers, but your budget may not stretch that far.

I went for a super cheap option with my PS3 and bought a second hand Logitech Z-5400 sysmtem off eBay for about £90! There's also the Z-5500 which is a little more powerful, but doesnt look very nice.

I've been reading on various other sites that it's best to get separates instead of a home cinema package. I mainly use the Playstation 3 for watching blu rays and gaming.

Yes - no question of that, but you have to pay extra for the extra quality.

Re: Surround sound system for PS3

I would spend the extra, to be honest. So much more flexibility that way. Nothing would hack me off more than buying a full system, then having to throw most of it in the bin because it has been superceded. Separates help with that, and a good set of separates is better anyway.
