Set Top Box required!

The thing is......I love Free View. But this Philips box is driving us wild. And as the new house is sorted to move into....we thought it would be nice to SEE WHATS ON TELLY IN MORE THAN 15 CHARACTERS!!

The Philips set top box misses off loads of the channel info, so you never know what is on telly. Its not got enough space!

Plus technology must have got better since we got it.....more signal strength? better decoding etc.

And we were thinking MAYBE one with a HDD built in...and Top Up option.

What do you guys think? Any good reviews recently?

I did soem searching and the best freeview box I have read about is the BT iPlayer+ (also called a netgem iplayer+) http://www.iplayer.co.uk/index1.asp

seems to have loads of stuff onboard including internet access (via broad band), on screen caller display, add on keyboard for net, etc

Anyway do a google and see what people think, its costs £90.

Has top up tv, but no HD.

Get a Humax PVR box. I can't recommend mine highly enough

the sony box that is around £80 is meant to be the best freeview box for picture etc available..

Now I need to know the following:

When it records DOES it put a track name, date or what on the menu to find the thing you recorded?

Do you get different choices of compression for space vs quality?

and does it have a timer for multi recording, and how many spaces does it have?

Its not got 2 tuners though

Yep that's the one I have. I paid £150

When it records, it puts the name of the program and the time/date and how long it lasts.

No compression choices, but 80GB is an awful lot. Good luck filling with stuff you'll watch regularly! You can change the HDD for a 120 or 160GB model as well if you desire

You can set as much as you want for recording. It has the seven-day EPG so that makes life easier for setting a whole week's worth of programming.

No, one drawback is theres only one tuner

But I still love it... Picture and sound quality are fantastic, nice menus, easy to use and navigate, and fast

Now that iplayer+ looks funky! I've got a fairly modern Philips freeview box myself (about 6 months old). I should really stick with it, as I think the next jump will be to a proper HTPC, so I'd be silly to pick one of these up in the mean time
