I am personally curious as to what the next gen iPod will be like. The 5.5G (and 2nd Gen Nano) do provide native support for gapless.. and Rockbox has been developping firmwares for Apple product for a long time (even at the time this thread started). If they can throw in an optical-out at some point (and continue to ramp up capacity), then it's all base covered for my needs.

players listed on http://build.rockbox.org/ are currently supported

player choice makes an ENORMOUS difference to a number of issues - such as battery life. part of the problem is that players like the ipod (for example) uses closed chips with no documentation, so the entire rockbox system needs to run on the wrong chips (killing battery life). the gigabeat is recommended because it's basically just a fast CPU with a big battery

Just came into this forum about to write a rant on exactly the same subject as my iaudio m3 is getting a bit full. Came across the Gigabeat through some vague remembrance of perpendicular hard disk technology then got incredibly angry at the utter ****fest that is the firmware.

Will look into rockbox further (had no idea it was a cross platform product!)...thanks very much!

EDIT: Although it looks like support for the S-series is still a fair way off.

the difference between the F and S from a rockbox standpoint is a bit of screen size, and 540mhz versus 300mhz - plus a 'secure' processor that makes a port much harder than it could be. since the player will never need to go over 100mhz during simple playback, and doom is smooth on 300mhz, i wouldn't worry too much about the differences between the two

i bought my F40 from expansys for about £155

    iAudio X5L w/ Rockbox

    • Long battery life ✔ (30 hours)
    • FM radio ✔
    • High quality DAC ✔(well, I think so)
    • Usable album metadata ✔ (tagcache)
    • Extensive audio codec support ✔
    • Aural enhancements (e.g. parametric equaliser) ✔
    • Album (gapless) support ✔

    Also:
    • Replay-gain support ✔ (very important for me!)
    • FM Recording ✔
    • Alarm ✔
    • No stupid drivers ✔
    • USB OTG ✔

Only thing it doesn't have is a digital out :\ - but at least the DAC is good enough to drive the living room amp/speakers nicely

Actually it also doesn't have a usb2 port on the player itself - have to use a stupid slot in device. Apart from that it's pretty kick ass, tho the toshiba gigabeat looks pretty sexy as well.

i like the way that with rockbox they actually added something to the player that cowon could never be bothered to do with the metadata....

shame that if like me your x5l breaks in the uk you actually cant get it repaired unless you send it to korea at your own cost... And one person i spoke to who did never got his sent back

2 year warranty isnt worth the paper its printed on. My x5l is only useful as a paper weight right now :'(

    My karma has finally broken!

The Gigabeat looks ok, but how easy is it to put rockbox on? your pic iis on the linux page of the manual... and more importantly how finnished is it?

Looks a bit big too, but thats probably the huge lcd screens fault.

+ where to buy, how much?

Ive done quite a bit more research on this player and found it to be discontinued. Basicly if I want one I have to get the 20gb version which is a bit small, esp if im going to have rockbox on it with video support (once its finnished!).
edit: the S version is not discontinued, so it makes sence why they have discontinued the F version. I expect the X version will never make it to the UK except the S will eventually get the oled screen.

Video support would be quite nice, since I have quite a few dvds of bands playing live.I doubt I would use it for watching tv episodes or anything though.

What I would like is to import the gigabeat X30 version, 30ggb hdd and bigger, OLED screen, better battery life... whilst still 100% compatable with rockbox.
It seems this might also be discontinued but was only released to asian and australian markets to begin with.

Ive looked at the iaudio and iriver players, but they dont seem to offer any nice features that my karma didnt already have. iaudio has a tiny screen in comparason to the gigabeat so basicly why pay for something thats not as good... since its still more expensive than the gigabeat.

The problem is I don't know any shops that specialise in exporting goods to the UK. I looked on playasia which I have heard about a few times but they only have consoles.
I guess its unlikely that any export retailer would stock these anyway since they can make a lot more sales from consoles - and no demand for ipods since we can buy over here....

It's USPS, not UPS. I don't know who will fulfil the UK side of the delivery. I would guess it will be RoyalMail or ParcelForce, PF delivered something sent from Japans mails service.

They usually send you a post card telling you the fees, either that or call you. FedEx will deliver it anyway and then hound you for the fees. UPS ask for it before or when they deliver. ParcelForce take it before they deliver.
