yep, just a d70 update...playing the numbers game with a bigger sensor BUT a down grade on the shutter mechanism, so its a d200 with d50 components...

As much as that was the speculation, not quite...Originally Posted by shiato storm
The D80 incooperates far more features from the D200 than people anticipated, including parts, if not all of the AF system & the viewfinder.
It's certainly a natural successor to the D70, but it's really very, very different.
edit : Unless you had one of these on pre-order like last millenium, shiato's right - you'll have a hard time getting your hands on one for a very long time. In all seriousness I'd say next year unless you were pre-ordering now. Nikon always struggles to meet initial demand!
no MLU..

yeah I saw that...odd that theres no mlu but then witht he particular shutter mechanism I suspect its not possible.

of course you could always get a Sony A100 with probably the same sensor, in-body stabilisation, sensor cleaning, MLU (via the self-timer) for Bob, that takes CF cards, £599 body only & available now ...
the biggest boo-boo for me is the SD cards, when all my other cameras use CF. Plus D200 is CF, so why not this thing?
Well the D50 is SD but the D70 is CF.
My guess is they are probably moving their more enthusiast oriented cameras to SD and leaving CF for the pro market.
Makes sense to me. Regular consumers are likely to have SD cards handy and they are cheap. Pros will probably have high end CF cards or microdrives already.
I have put a small deposit down on one of these now, £10 at A J Purdey, they say they hope to get me one in September, so fingers crossed.
If it comes to the end of Sept and no sight then I'll have to rethink.............
There goes my DSLR intro for this summer though
I just figured that If i'm gonna do this I should wait (for as long as I can and get the best I can afford, don't want to be replacing it for 5 yrs!)
Thank you all for all your input (esp Shiatso and Hoodi) and I will keep you updated as things transpire
No worries - I think it was worth the wait, the D200 was offering an awful lot for the money, and this is essentially a D200 in a slightly smaller and less robust body - but at nearly half the cost. Bargain!
cool, hope it serves you well, if its anything like the d70 it will be a great camera.
on the comment of the sony - yes its practically identical, sony make most of the parts that fit inside the nikon so IQ would essentially be very similar - then its mostly down to the glass.
SD vs CF? well, its 6 of one half a dozen of the other. SD's are a little quicker I think (?), better in the fact that you can't break the internal pins (!) and smaller...so whats great abut CF's over that then? not a lot really, they're small and used all over the place as a well established form of memory so its unlikely to change overnight...blissfully I have two card slots CF and SD best of both worlds!!

The fact that a lot of people who have D70s/D70s' (or even competitors bodies) & may have considerd upgrading will already have a good few £ invested in CF.Originally Posted by shiato storm
At least the Sony offers CF & memory stick.
Thanks Shiatso , SD suits me as I only have a couple of CF from my old Fuji 602 and they are 128MB !!!!
I somehow feel happier waiting for the Nikon and having that vast range of lenses than plumping for the SONY - not that I have a problem with Sony - i'd just rather buy from either Canon or Nikon, Probably just me being daft but my dad had an Canon A1 for years, so it was either a 30d
or the D80 and I made me choice
(as long as it arrives in Sept) <crosses fingers>
Or its a 30D for me, I can only wait so long..............This started in June!
