I brought this one on ebay for £15 and its well built and very solid. Mine even has small spirt levels built in.

You have lots of control over the camera as well with the mount.

Not everyone needs a tripod often enough to justify £160 for one (dashed good though it may be), Bob

I think I picked up one of these in Oz when I forgot my regular tripod. Careful you don't overtighten the screws or the casing can crack....

I shopped around and got my SLik 700DX (with head) for about £85. Definately well worth it. Very solid and smooth mount.

Cheap tripods are fine for normal digital cameras, but if you are wanting to put anything bigger on they just don't work well. A tripod is supposed to provide a steady base to shoot on, and cheap plastic just bends too easily.

But at around £10 for a tripod, it will do you fine for a while.

yeh but trouble is i used one of those 15 quid jobbies cos my father in-law bless him is a cheap b'stard and wouldn't know quality if it bit him in the butt! and it was crap, trying to take pics of the moon or anything slow shutter was a complete nightmare as it kept moving with the mirror slap!

from that moment i promised myself a decent tripod!

i think i found a similar deal - think it was bristol cameras, but i had a shoot i needed it for, and they wouldn't have stock of it for a couple of weeks, so i kept shopping around and the only place that had it in stock was warehouseexpress.co.uk

Mirror lockup? I know what you mean though - I'll be grabbing one to last me until around Feb when i should be able to spend serious £££ on a Manfrotto.
