Lordy, I'd never run a torture test under a stock cooler

My Q6600 used to climb north of 70C just doing some handbrake - and that was with a spare 140mm fan pointing at it to get more cool air to the cooler! Although I'd agree with your conclusion that there was probably also some other issue, since those temps were *very* high, even for a stock cooler. Glad you got it sorted
