So would you buy a Core i3 over an FX-6300?

I'm in a similar situation at the moment, but for me since I'm going mitx it's intel vs AMD FM2 chips.

For gaming I think the AMD chip would be fine, it's mainly in things other than games that the intel chips tend to show more of an advantage (I think).

The Core i3 weaknesses get worse especially with things like video encoding.

Moreover, you already have an Intel CPU,so its easier for you to re-use it anyway!!

For me it would depend on AMD's Steamroller working in a current decent board. If it would then yes, i would buy a FX6300. If it would'nt then i am not sure what i would do. I would'nt buy a i3 that's for sure. I really think that they are overpriced. Then again you could say the same about the i5.

    I agree, the i3's I have used haven't impressed.

fx-6300 is the best for your money, considering it can handle SLI and Xfires just fine

    Re: i5 haswell CPU dilemma

I know I'm completely late to the thread but I only just noticed it.

As previously mentioned, that 'CPU hierarchy' is all over the place; I'd pay it very little attention. I've no idea how they're justifying the ranks but it's not representative of actual gaming! I mean they have i3 in rank 2, the same as 6300/8350, and they've essentially just jammed every CPU from Intel from the past 3 years, above i3, into the top tier.

The AMD Vishera CPUs should be at least on the level with the i5s, or if you place a heavy weighting on newer game engines (rather than older games which aren't remotely CPU-bound at real settings anyway), the i7s.

    Re: i5 haswell CPU dilemma

I wouldn't get an i3 for anything. It's vastly inferior to the 6300/8320. Some recent games are basically unplayable on the i3 (e.g. Crysis 3, Far Cry 3).

I agree i3 chips are truly 'entry level'.

Find a cheap Ivybridge Core i5-3570k on eBay for circa £120 like I did and O/C it...job done!

I got the 4670k from amazon as well, I'm well pleased with it, upgraded from a FX6300, although if I spent the extra to start with and got an 8320 then I wouldn't have bothered (my motherboard didnt support it). Then if I had to buy a 8320 and motherboard would be a similar price to the I5 with motherboard (about £25-30 difference when I got mine).
I certainly notice a difference on WOW on ultra with a 7970. It runs BF4 well as well, kinda think I should have tried it on teh 6300 before I upgraded though.
