Wassthisaboutthen?
I've just installed Steam, torn between downloading Orange Box or buying it retail and waiting for it to be delivered (postal strike still causing knock-on delays I think). All I've got at the mo is the HL2 demo!
But when I've got the Orange Box, what's the community for? Did someone say it's like Xbox live?
And can I add any other game I already have to Steam, so I can play without CDs or something?
Help please, I'm years behind on multiplayer gaming since only got broadband a month ago!

the community is similar to x-box live in that it gives you a friends list (as well as group lists such as Hexus) and you can see what they're playing and join them (if they are playing on an open multiplayer server, and you have the game which is being played) it also allows you to chat with friends and other people in the community.

Cheers Blademrk - but still confused because Steam has links to Friends, Groups, etc. So are these all parts of the Community? Just links to part of the same thing?
DM
Friend lists are the same as with X-box Live, just individual people you've sent/received friend invites to/from wheras Groups are a collection of people (not necessarily on your friends lists).
A group could be a clan or a group of friends you play regularly with or even simply a list of people from a forum.
You can belong to more than one group (I'm a member of the Hexus and Bit-Tech groups for example).
Groups can be public (anyone can join) or closed (where you need an invite to join).
The Hexus group at the moment is set to closed, so if you want to join you just need to pop a link to your steam profile in this thread (should be like this "http://steamcommunity.com/id/<username>" replacing <username> with your Steam ID) and either myself, Menthel or Neon will add you.

Cheers Blademrk. I'll take another look at it when I get home tonight and post my ID to this thread later.
I presume then once I'm in the Group, I can see what fellow Hexites are playing and possibly jump in with them.

Right, so I've logged into the Community, now I make up a SteamID. And then a custom SteamID URL.
Don't really understand why anyone would have them different to each other?! Don't we have enough user names and passwords to remember?!
Naturally, Steam Community :: ID :: DancingMatt wants into the Hexus group please!
