why do you have to buy the game a well as pay subs. I thought it was one or the other, not both.

lol since when? every non free mmorpg as far as i know requires you to buy the game and the subs after 30days
Eve is free to download and you pay for the sub, Wow is free to download and you pay the subs, LOTR is free download etc etc
Age of Conan is £30 + Subs.

Well its different now Jay, but it wasn't that way when it came out, original wow was paid for, expansion cost me £18.
As for whether its worth it, no other game can account for 100+ play time ever, not in the years since release.
AoC wouldn't be foolish enough to provide a paid for expansion any time in the next year, i'm pretty sure if they did people would get very pissy about having to pay lots more as well as a the monthly subscription fee, which is meant for content as well as standard services.

Yeah, I don't really see where the 'social responsibility' comes in either. Maybe taking a 3 day break is tough for some WoW players but it does f**k all to help the earthquake victims unless they're using those 3 days to do something helpful.
Really, what is your obsession with taking people away from WoW and comparing everything to it?
There are more than enough people in the world playing MMO's to keep any number going, I mean people are still playing SWG and UO.
Yes WAR will take a lot of people away from WoW, but WoW is not going anywhere for a long, long time. I read an interview with one of the WoW top bods, and they are talking about doing a complete graphics overhall for the next expansion after WotLK. If they do go down that road, you can bet the shiny new graphics will pull even more back, but that's a couple of years off at least.

When did WoW go free? I know you can download the client for free, but I thought you still had to pay for an account (which is essentially what you pay for when you buy the game at a store). LotRO also seems to be the same (Or appears to be if you visit The Lord of the Rings Online).
As for Josh's obsession with WoW: I can only assume that WoW dropped him on his head as a baby or something. He's not giving any answer despite being asked numerous times about what seems to be causing his hatred for it (and he certainly hasn't played it), so it must have scarred him in some way. From where I'm standing a fair old chunk of players of a lot of MMOs will buy it, play it 'til the content runs out for thema nd then look for something else. I suspect that had AoC, WotLK and WAR all launched together (as was initially supposed to be the case) then at least one of those titles would have been getting a lot less coverage. Which one? Who knows, but to spread the releases out (WAR is now due in Autumn, WotLK who knows?)it means that players will have had chance to spend their money on each game, play it a bit and maybe get bored enough to jump ship at the release of the Next Big Thing.
As I say, AoC arrives for me on Weds. I'll install it, play it and see what I think but I'm not holding out too much hope of playing it long enough to be hitting endgame.
i will try wow and see what all the fuss is about.
Don't feel you have to Josh - you clearly are dead set against it. The problem is that you are stating pretty firm opinions of something that you've not experienced. It's like me saying that Calamari is horrible, and tastes like ass when clearly I have never eaten squid nor ass.
I'd be interested to give this a try actually, but in all honesty before release everything I looked at didn't look too great. Before WoW release I remember watching videos and thinking "OMG that looks awesome, I MUST buy it" (partially being a fan of the Warcraft series and partially being a huge fan of LotR books and other similar fantasy titles, books and films) but I just don't get that with AoC.
Also, LOL at the comparison between AoC and WoW releases... they aren't trying to hype the release, are they?
Not quite mate - what you paying for is a month's play, and the media, a pretty box, etc. You can indeed download the client, create a 'trial' account for 10 days for free as well, if you decided to a full, subscription acount, then that's where the moolah starts.
And starts...and goes on...and on..and on...etc.etc.

Not sure how long it took on my first character. My 2nd when I knew the quests was around 8 hours.
