I don't understand that one either - sometimes it's not more expensive, but often it is, even when buying from a UK shop. My best guess is that they actually charge the correct price, and retail stores subsidise the cost with income gained from advertising and/or just to get you shopping thus more likely to buy other products as well.

It's not like we find a thread of someone asking for Photoshop help and ask them to prove they have a valid Photoshop licence....
I do know the history of the thread, I followed it and posted on it, infact Nick himself admitted that he'd overstepped the mark and had a bad day. He has also stated on this thread that he wants to ban me but it's not up to him alone which to my mind is pretty unreasonable considering it would simply because I have a different opinion on capitalism and intellectual property rights and have been honest about my downloading activities in a thread about DRM and piracy. His insinuation that peoples opposition to DRM was simply because they wanted to get something for nothing was just rather silly, afterall if you get a pirate copy you don't have to worry about DRM.

Oh dear, oh dear... It's late, I'm tired and I'll address these points in the morning... in the meantime, how about someone does some homework, looks up 'libel' and then perhaps gets an inkling of where I'm coming from instead of continually de-focusing from my other points which are quite clearly not open for subjective interpretation.

peace out.

/heads off to Pasta Hut to bulk up... so there's even more weight to throw around.

Actually, before I go... read the thread about the pics... and as you read it, try and understand that I was doing my very best to AVOID banning a valued member of the forums... of course, you'll read it however you want to see it, but if anyone else wants to go have a look, feel free.

There is nothing libel in me admitting to having pirated material, hexus has no reason to fear legal repurcussions for me admitting to using warez, that is a fact. I know people who run forums and who have had to deal with legal issues and they could only laugh at the suggestion that Hexus could get into legal bother because a user of the forums admitted to downloading copyrighted material, infact since one of the forums is a pretty big london based community board with a whole sub forum for discussion of drugs (legal or otherwise) they'd be very silly billys if they were accountable for people admitting to taking drugs, as would the BBC and everyother major broadcaster or publisher in the world.

As for the issue of advertisers well yes that is entirely different however your point only opens up a much bigger can of worms about the independence of Hexus, afterall unfavourable reviews of products generate more bad will than any amount of forum users admitting to downloading things, does that mean Hexus should be wary of posting bad reviews? And again your point is hugely selective as you can go through this site and find thousands of instances of posters insulting companies and individuals such as Michael Jackson, Gary Glitter, Heather McCartney, Overclockers, PC World, EA, Microsoft and Apple in ways that technically could (they would never act upon it ofcourse) be viewed as libelous and which put Hexus on much shakier legal ground than a user admitting to engaging in piracy in a discussion about DRM.

As for the Crysis thread, well I've re read it and you do call for the poster to post pictures proving he has a legit copy or he will face a ban, a demand that was well beyond the remit of simply covering Hexus's back, as I said at the time.

It seems obvious that you have a particular bee in your bonnet about piracy, that's your perojative and it is perfectly reasonable (and sensible) for you to crack down on people linking to warez, discussing where to get them or how to use them but I think you overstep the mark when you start threatening posters with bans for simply admitting to having pirated material and putting forward a social and political critique of intellectual property rights.

Re: Far cry 2(bad news for pc)

On topic The game looks amazing. A preview In edge talks about how the character has Malaria at the start so is impaired.

Theres also the fact that the save checkpoints are huts that are usually host to bad guys which need to be taken out before being able to get to the save points. The PC version will have quick save though so will be interesting to see how it works.

When i first heard they were making far cry 2 I really thought it was just a cynical cash in to use the license Especially after the farce of the console editions of far cry but it does look like ubisoft have put the effort into this.

Agreed completely - either they've done a great PR job, or they really have turned it into a great game that I wouldn't be surprised ends up being more sucessful than Crysis.

Actually, about the console version of Far Cry- I was surprised to find that my console playing heath^h^h^h^h friends actually really liked it - they are a bit worried that FC2 will be more like the PC version, but it was the console version of FC that got them most interested in FC2 in the first place.

Hi guys it's been quite a long time since I last made a post *COUGH* World of Warcraft *COUGH* but just thought I had to chime in with something.

This DRM does completely nothing to stopping pirates and infact the DRM has nothing to do with stopping pirates. It's just the big cover story to distract you from what is really going on.

If they can get your game tied online to a certain account what do they do? Think hard what annoys publishers... What don't they get a single penny from that retailers like Game and Blockbuster get a fortune from?

The 2nd hand market.

Tie your game to a certain account and the 2nd hand market disapears.

Re: Far cry 2(bad news for pc)

basically boils down to DRM doesnt work but it still gets used in games
wouldnt be a problem but it can cause problems.

I personally had a problem with some sort of protection (not sure if it was DRM or not)
but it detect i had demon tools on my pc and wouldnt let me install/run it so i simply didnt.

main problem there is i cant take it back for a refund as all shops state they dont do returns
on pc games.

Re: Far cry 2(bad news for pc)

You can still sell the games second hand.

And the latest Securom is working well for some games, and is causing all kinds of problems for pirates. Alone in the Dark, Stalker Clear Sky, etc. They may get hacked eventually (some don't) but the first weeks/months when everyone is talking about how cool the game, and all the cheap arse pirates have to watch all the excitement and not play it, is enough to 'convert' many of them and make them just go and buy it instead.

The new Sacred 2 game is interesting because it not only has SecuRom but it is also filled with protection. Every 13 levels is does some kind of check, and every 24 hours and every 7 hours of play time, and there is a skill lock at level 25 etc. All this stuff is enough to make a lot of pirates think bugger it and just pay the measly £24.99 and have it delivered to your door in a nice box with a colourful manual and the original DVD's and you don't have to waste any time or bandwidth downloading it etc.

So it's not completely useless.

wouldnt be a problem but it can cause problems.

I personally had a problem with some sort of protection (not sure if it was DRM or not)
but it detect i had demon tools on my pc and wouldnt let me install/run it so i simply didnt.

main problem there is i cant take it back for a refund as all shops state they dont do returns
on pc games.
Turn daemon tools off....
