The longer they leave it the less impressive it is going to look - I remember being in awe at the tech demos for HL2 and the leaked doom3 demo.

... but looking at them now and comparing to the likes of Far Cry with its stunning landscapes, water and lighting effects and Painkiller with its exceptionally detailed textures and high polygon counts they are going to have to release their games soon.

I'm still in no doubt that Doom3 will be absolutely stunning as Carmack is the master of graphics engines and always leads the way.

But goddamit I wish they would hurry up !!!

Yeah, this is what i'm talking about. Amazing graphics last year (we hadn't played a DX 9 feature rich FPS then) but now, its kinda "Been there, done that"
Maybe what is keeping them is that they are trying to match the competition, say their graphics were the equivalent of far cry last year, but now they just look dated so they are trying to make em better?
It's anyones guess what they are really doing with it.

i read that. But then i also read that HL2 was coming out on sept 30 2003.

I reckon there actually is no HL2, and it's a clever conspiracy between valve and ATi. How many people bought 9800s "because HL2 will be out soon"...

There's one thing I consider a great shame.
i'm probably not going to find much agreement here but I think it's a tad unfair making games only the elit PCs can play ESPECIALLY when the said game is a Half Life game.
I mean to quote the Half Life website
"So you don't want to have to buy a special hardware accelerator just to get 16-bit color, colored lighting, blurring, translucency or other cool visual effects? Then don't. Half-Lifeā„¢ has developed all these features in software so now they're an integral part of the gameplay, not just eye-candy. Of course, if you do have Open-GL, Direct 3D or MMX hardware, things will look mind-bogglingly cool. "

One of the most common favourites about Half Life I hear from my friends (and most of my friends and major hardware nuts or anything) Is that it is a proffesional FPS with fairly good graphics and a real plot yet it runs on their PC. These people are bugged because their PCs have problems with Red Faction and Alien Vs. Pred2 (My all time fave FPS) so they thoroughly enjoy Half Life.
Valve seemed to bear great pride with Half Life especially at it's performance and now they're working on a game that most people are scared won't run on their rig.
"If you don't have an anti-static wrist strap you can discharge your self by touching the metal edges of your ATX case, although this is not recommended."

    Building a PC!
    Components So Far:
    XFX Geforce MX 4000 128mb
"SumEvision" (Who the hell are they) Multi channel PCI Sound card.
Standard 56K Modem that I'll probably never use.
Case with a bit missing but it's only superficial.
(God this PC is turning into a joke. )

At least Half life 2 will run like sheet of a shiny shover on your rig though

My rig handled farcry but it didnt max it out. Surely Halflife 2 will require a leser system than that of farcry. Unless valve have been spending months updating the graphics that now look 'dated'.

From the latest videos it still looks stunning to me

Looking round the net there are (yet again) rumours and stories being posted that its not going to make the summer release date (As per my previous thread on its release date showing 30/07/04 at HMV)

I agree that Doom 3 is going to be the one to look forward to more than anything else, I have lost all interest in Half Life 2 now. Its just one excuse after another. Not forgetting that they have kinda made ATI look bad as they were bundling it with their cards.

Seing the demos running showed us that they were well on their way to getting this done and here we are almost a year later and apparently more setbacks yet again. Its like the new Duke Nukem game that they said was in production but now almost 5 years later and nothing whatsoever.

I am gonna be mightilly annoyed if i get the SP-only version in pre-order that i have made with Game last autumn or whenever it was. It better be the full stuff.

I must admit that after the countless delays and general amount of BS comming out of the valve offices my opinion on the game has changed. Last september i was waiting eagerly for what was going to be the greatest game ever. Now im waiting for a over hyped massively delayed game thats going to be superseeded very quickly. Long live Doom 3.
