I just flicked through an old 2001 issue of PC Format, where it has the 'top 20 games of 2002' (thats the first joke). Some of this top 20 include.....

    Die Hard: Nakatomi Plaza
    Unreal 2
    Doom 3
    Deus Ex 2
    Colin McRae Rally 3.0
    Sid Meier's Simgolf (eh?!)
    Master of Orion 3
    Republic: The Revolution
    IGI 2
    Thief III
    C & C Renegade
    Iron Storm

Uhhhh yea, all those games were great wern't they? If there's one moral from this mag, it's don't believe any hype
To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.

re: "If there's one moral from this mag, it's don't believe any hype"

Well, I'd add that most of the (very childish, biased) hype comes from the mags themselves. There used to be a time when I bought literally every damn gaming mag out there. In the last year or two, the only mag. I've bought each month is Edge. The reason I stopped buying the rest was exactly for the hype you mentioned: I got sick of reading their 2-3 years of constant hype for a game and then having to face the let down. I know it's not their fault that a game is disappointing, but when 90% of them are, why spend so much time hyping them? To sell mags, of course...

Free 'quality' web site reviews like Gamespot are still out there, and most of the time they get it right (although I'd certainly question some of their current Doom3 scores; mind you, they still aren't as stupidly high as most other sites.)

Of course, 'end-user' forums (like Hexus :-)) seem to be the best approach. Get your reviews straight from people who have played the game and have no vested financial interest in hyping it.

    Just my two penneth.
