Which one? CS original or CS: Source?

If so, start off by getting steam from http://www.steampowered.com/

If you have a copy of HL lying around enter your key when you register to give you access to games. If not you can buy them through steam.

CS uses the Quake 1 engine (the modified Quake 1 engine) which was developed 8 years ago. CS Source uses the Source engine which was finished not long ago. Basically, graphically, CS Source is far superior. It also has the havok physics engine just to give it that edge. The Source engine is the same engine that powers HL2.

what do you need to play CS?

    1) The Brain of a Monkey
    2) The Patience of a Saint
    3) A 266 Pentium II with 64mb Ram
    4) A developed sense of Humour
    5) An interest in Retro Gaming
    6) A 15 button 5000 dpi mouse
    7) Rugged keyboard (if you have a temper like mine)

Kezzer has given the more accepted answer for CS Source. The appeal of CS is the community rather than the game itself IMHO.

you've overspecced that clingy, you need a p133 with 32mb ram, or p120 with 24mb ram and an 8mb 3d accelerator

for normal cs (cs 1.6) you need the steam install file, can be got straght of steams home site, iirc its ~382mb

you then need a steam account, you can get this when you install the steam file from above, or if you have one you can jump straght in and start playing

if you dont have a steam acount, create one as above, get a cs cd key new( ebay = £10) then register it with your account and your ready for action.

be prepared to turn ure speakers down though, major W00TING is happening
