    Unhappy PS2 Dying?

For a while now (especially when starting up), I've been getting buzzing/clicking noises from my PS2. Today, I got a disk read error whilst playing GTA: SA. It happened when I was going into a building - it took longer than usual, then the disk read error message came up, and then it finally loaded the building.

Other symptoms include slow loading of missions, and slow loading of the SA map.

The last thing that happened was when I loaded the map up. It got to the screen that says "please wait", and just stopped. When it started repeating the last few seconds of the radio I thought I'd best turn it off.

What do you think is wrong with it? Is my PS2 on it's last legs, or do I just need on of those lens cleaner things?

    Thanks

Hmm .. I have this problem!. .Making lots of buzzing+clicking noises and at first used a lens cleaner and it worked for a while . . but now it doesn't work at all. . won't play any games or dvd's!. .And makes lots of noise and just spins up the disc making lots of noise!. . I don't have a clue whats wrong with mine either.

Worth trying a lens cleaner. .

Although I did think it could be dead!. .

Either consult the firm you purchased the PS2 from originally, to see if they can do anything (most likely not) or just bin it and get another. Disposable generation and all that

Is it really not fixable? I'm not one to throw something away.

Also, where I got it from is complicated. I got it for crhistmas 2001. It came from toys R us, so I probably won't be able to get it replaced anyway. The February after I'd got it (Feb 02), we moved house. The removal people that put the stuff in the lorry to take it to our new house seem to have nick that PS2.

I eventually got a new one - where from I don't know, insurance probably, but still that'd be beyond contacting them for a new one won't it?

Yeah - I know. I'd rather save my old one though if it's possible though TBH. But just incase it can't be saved, does anyone have an answer to these questions:?

    * Is the PStwo faster than the PS2? Will it load games quicker?
    * Is the PStwo quieter than the PS2?

OR - has anyone else had the same problem as me (I've heard disk read errors are very popular nowadays ) and fixed it?

Same speed iirc, and i think they might have gotten rid of the fan but don't quote me on that one.

    1) no
    2) yes

The problem with fixing PS2's is that it could be one of several things in your case. You would end up ordering more than one part to find out which one was broken, which would cost more than the 90 quid for a PStwo.
I can think of 3 things which would cause such a thing, but its hard to tell without having the machine with me. Even then, its only an educated guess based on past experience.
If you can take it to a repair shop, and let them look at it, go for it. But most dont bother now, as parts for the PS2 can cost a bomb : It just makes more sence to buy a new one with a year warranty.

OK, how much do you think it'll cost to take it somewhere for a repair?

It'll depends on what needs repairing, but you can look at about £30 for labour + parts.

Erm OK, I think I'll try and live with it for a while longer, but this kind of thing starts happening a lot, I might get a PStwo. I'm just not too sure if I can justify the cost TBH. I probably will since I have about 17ish games all together, but I only usually play it when a decent game comes out.

I'll probably look for a cheap £90 one.

No offence, but I doubt that would be true. Do you have a link?

I think I might try a DVD lens cleaner. There've been good reviews on the amazon one, so I think I'll get this one:
