    Which has nothing to do with a proxy !

    From googling, it seems loads of people are having the same issue :|

    can you elaborate a bit more as to your connection status? ie are on a uni campus that goes through a proxy or something?

    Apex may well be correct in that it might be your ports that are blocked - the proxy might not be a problem. Windows should auto put everything through your proxy anyway;

    For example last year I was stayin in halls @ staffs uni, and they have a shockingly bad net service [resnet] which routes all connections through a proxy up to stoke, then to manchester and then to the web. What I found was that a load of ports were blocked or limited, meaning that things like bit torrent didnt always work well, or some games/apps. I thought it was the proxy aswell, but it wasnt, it was the ports ;/ the gits @ stoke controlled which ports were open and closed aswell so even the techies at staffs uni couldnt fix the problem.

    so anyway my point is the same, it might be a problem with ports rather than a proxy, dependant on your situation

    Surely this should depend on what type of proxy its using ?
    If its a web / HTTP proxy, nothing else should go through it... (kinda like freeserve's transparent proxy on port 80).

    And resnet is worse than ever this year. There has been a petition about it too. Its really, REALLY, is bad (packetloss is averaging ~10% some nights)

    My point above still stands though, a proxy and open ports are two totaly different things.

    You sure you don't need to put the proxy details into Steam? (Don't know if you cant but hey).

    Mmmm - I'm applying to Staffs uni ... can't be doing with bad internet connection

    I use AnalogX proxy to share the connection at home

    Nowhere to enter proxy details

    Steam isn't even tripping my firewall for access.
