    Half Life 2 Question

OK heres my problem, I want to get Half Life 2 but i travel between two states alot. when iam at home i have a cable connection, but when iam at work (other state ) i have no internet connection. So iam wondering if i buy the game will i be able to play when iam without an internet connection? should i just say screw it and get Far Cry or Doom 3... been playing both demos and now since i have a computer that runs them they are more enjoyable... anyone have any input???

you NEED an internet connection (dial-up) ONCE in order to play half-life 2. download the game where you have decent internet access, right-clock it in the list & click backup game, then restore it on the other machine - you need to connect to the net once in order to ennable offline mode, but otherwise, it should be fine.

Just get a pay as you go (no monthly charge) dial up connection and use it just to activate HL2, you'll be connected for no longer than 30 mins costing you very little (assuming you have a phone line and a modem...).

But with no internet connection you can't play HL2. You could take the PC from work to home and use the net connection there to activate HL2, but i dunno if that's possible for you.
I don't mean to sound cold, or cruel, or vicious, but I am so that's the way it comes out.

its not a problem, you only have to activate it once, after that you can play without the net

get it, its miles better than farCry, and better than doom3

If I deactivate steam and my net connection completely then try to start HL2 it wont allow me even though I selected remember user and pass etc. I get a message saying Steam cannot connect. I would check it out first.

Out of the 2 other games mentioned I would go with FarCry. Just clocked Doom a few nights ago and its very samey all the way through except Hell, monsters are constantly the same save but a few variations with weapons etc.

HL2 is an awesome game, so much work has been put into it. Its understandable that Valve have selected this way of activation etc to try and stop piracy, however if you dont have a net connection you could be a bit screwed.

I spoke to someone at Sierra a few days after release about playing it as I didnt have my net up and running yet and they wernt happy about the action Valve taken as alot of changes were made without Sierra knowing about it and I was told that Valve will not be having anymore games released through Sierra with the problems with HL2 over the past year with the source code being stolen and various other things.

Mind you Sierra were really good, the guy on the phone said to me that if I wanted to I could send them the game for a full refund. Big thumbs up there !

Yeah, I got that impression when talking to the guy on the phone. Wish I had asked for a name and if I could get a quick Q&A session from him to post here.

    Always the case though !
