    game settings...

as many of you know I've recently got UT2004 but i'm not entirely sure about my settings and how far I can go with in the bounds of acceptable framerates...anyway, here's what I have: 6600gt (the xfx one which is overclocked as stock at 600/1000mhz), a non-overclocked amd64 3000 (90nm winchester) running at 1.88ghz and 1 gig of ram...so all fairly standard really. I know I could drop everything and hope for high speeds but i'd also like it too look good

I was running at 1024x768 resolution, and then just upped it to 1152x864 and all seems to be ok. As far as the detail settings go, I tried to take a screen shot but didn't work so, here they are in long hand!!
    textures: high
    character: high
    world: normal
    physics: high
    dynamic mesh LOD: normal
    decal stay: normal
    character shadows: full
[all the boxes following are checked]
fog set to .5 - bit confused about this one is a higher number 'fog close in' or 'further away'? instructions say one thing, the hover-mouse pop-up box says another.

is there a way to display frame rates on the screen somehow so that I can see how each thing affects performance or can I just wack certain ones up safely and not suffer much.

edit: is there also a way of not loosing the target reticule each time I play too? it seems it spontaneously disappears when it wants to - either not there when I start playing (requiring me to enter settings tab), or goes when I move from one level to the next

Typing stats fps in the console should show your FPS, Here's a list of the commands you can use.

Fraps is a very useful fps tool - it's game independent.

right, been playing settings as posted above but had the fps thing running on the side of the screen and I hit 27...yes thats right, I hit 27 frames a second! i thought this card was meant to be fast but its stalling on 27fps! had to lower a few settings - dropped the resolution down to 1024x768 and it ran even slower!
    que pasa?!! wtf?

i'm not overclocked but it should manage things fine even without tweeking

i run it with everything maxed out (the 'holy ****' settings) @ 1600x1200 on my system (9800pro, athlonXP3200+)

No AA or AF but you cant really see much diff @ 1600x1200 anyway

runs fine on mine, dont know what the fps is but its perfectly playable

not entirely sure , I did check the tab and had a root around to see whats up, everything is left up to the game so if the game is choosing AA/AF up the kyber then thats why I'm stalling so badly...since its all so new I didn't want to start messing things straight away - it was playing fine the other night, could it be certain maps with wide open spaces cause problems? as it was happening on those onslaught maps (the coolest game type) so I'd be upset if it were because of that
I take it I change these things in the display settings [desktop] tab and scroll down the list when I open up advances settings...

I see people use 2 AA and 8 AF all over the place. AA has more effect than AF so AF is up a lot and AA is just up a bit...

I also notice nVidia provide .exe settings for certain games so when they start a settings profile automatically loads up. would it be best to configure one of these for UT2004? hoping its pretty straight forward procedure to do!

What are your complete specs? Iirc it's a pretty beefy A64 system so it shouldn't struggle at all, especially with UT2004.

Have you got any other crap running in the background that could be stealing CPU cycles?

I wouldn't bother with Nvidia's individual game things, just set the global AA and AF to off or really low or whatever. It'll override the game's settings.

nothing else going on in the background at all - i make sure its all turned off. unless tehres some gimp windows service running around stealling all my needed resources [not impossible to imagine ]

    complete specs:
    amd64 3000+ at 1.8ghz (not overclocked)
    MSI K8N Neo2 Plat. (939, nForce3 Ultra)
    XFX 6600GT (not O/C'd running stock at 600/1000 - thats 300x2 if I'm right)
    Tagan 420w
Seagate 'cuda 160g (2x partitions, 10 for OS, the rest for progs)
western digital 40g back up drive (with pagefile running off it)
    windows xppro sp2

so its all well within UT2004 bounds...i wonder why its sticking. could be AA/AF settings as discussed. I can check when I get back this eve.

Most odd Maybe the AA/AF is pushing things to the limit... Especially at 1600x1200... I dunno

yeah, but I'm only at 1152x864...sounds like I'll have to rummage through the settings this evening and see what I can see. if others are able to get 1280 res. with 9800 then mine should be near that!
