A lot of people can afford to buy the best. so why does it matter?

In 2 years a console will look pathetic compared to a PC, so it better be cheap.

One thing i like about PC's is that almost all our PC's are unique(different components etc..) while consoles are all the same..But than again it is posible to customize your 360 now..

which is down to being a pc enthusiast, not about hames - it's because pcs are all so different that performance on them sucks clock-for-clock compared to games consoles.

To turn that comment on it's head m8, that's why many software bugs are found, ie. no matter how much testing is done on a game before release, there is no way of testing for every permutation of hardware. That's one of the reasons why console development is so popular with developers.

They don't exist yet - whatever comes out as the next gen to the 7800s will be on a par with the PS3. Since it will liklely be almost identical to the PS3's GPU, much like the xbox and GF3s.

Well this is a good informative discussion lads - not any sillyness yet so keep it going.

    Now for my two cents.

I have a very high end PC (its fair to say) and I play PC games a lot. I built this for a lot of reasons: mostly for gaming but with web dev, surfing, media centre, word processing, e-mailing and other things in mind. I love my PC and love playing online games and the awesome community that comes with them (most of the community ). My PC play COD2 @ 1920 x 1200 MAX'd out and looks awesome - much like the XBox 360

BUT I'm still thinking of buying a 360 for several factors:

1: Gaming with mates - I can sit around on my tod on my PC or have a few mates round with a few beers, PES X (when its out) and some cool wireless controllers. The choice is mine with a 360 as well and ultimately thats what I want - some decent human interaction (and some beer - mmmmmm)

2: My 2405FPW supports HD so I'm sorted (no HDMI but hey ) so my XBox will look very noice

3: Consoles have none of the PC hassles - no fiddling or BSOD's (aint had any in a while so I guess I've some due ) or stuff like that. Also with a console I don't feel I have to constantly upgrade - but my PC I feel I MUST. Be nice to have a little (or not-so-little) box that just sits there and doesn't get routinely opened up and stuff replaces

4: I can pick up the 360 under one arm, take it to a mates house and enjoy it over there. Maybe his non-HDTV won't look so good but meh - he'll get a new one soon No way would I pick up my stacker and take it round his house

and finally: 5: I know in three years time my XBox 360 will still play XBox 360 games - my PC will be struggling to even load the ones made for PC's at that point

BUT having said all that I could never get rid of a PC as I thoroughly enjoiy tinkering under the hood - the reason I upgrade so often as I enjoy being proud of my performance PC

Anyhoo - just a kinda rant but basically I LOVE my gaming PC and its a joy to play on but XBox and generally consoles are great

    On another note - where can I pre-order a PS3??

Like I said this is a good discussion of the various points and has certainly made me think about a few things

the original topic was one of cost. the usual pc-"gamer" lot have jumped in feet first, but on a purely finiancial front, consoles *are* cheaper. not better, just cheaper.

If I was a millionare I could afford the best, but would I splash out 870 grand on a Bugatti Veyron?

No I wouldnt, its not a matter of 'if you can afford it, buy it' its a matter of value for money too.

Say a PC of slightly worse specs than the 360 was available from game for 1,500, would I pay 1,600 for a Xbox 360? Just because I can afford it or would I wait for a games console to come out at a reasonable price, even if the specs were not as good. Compare this to the technically superior and overpriced at launch Xbox, did you buy it because you could have the best? or did the majority buy the PS2 as it was better value, and in the amount of games for available for it, better.

Also in 2 years a top end PC will devalue more than a console ever will, so why does a console have to be cheap?

Becuase a Console has to last a certain amount, and it will get old quickly, compared to a top PC.

The lifespan of a current console is about 5 or 6 years, the original PS1 still had games being made for it after 8.

Imagine a top end PC in 5 or 6 years, let alone 8, 5 or 6 years ago I think I was on a P233.

Why do i continue to get sucked into the silly threads? It's pointless and daft, yet strangly enjoyable (much like gaming then i guess)

I'm willing to bet that in 2 years time, you will be able to buy a PC for around £700 that will be capable of playing XBOX360 standard games (a high end system would wipe the floor with it). An Xbox360 will probably be about £150, and given that you would need a HD-TV to really make the most of the Xbox360, the gap does narrow rather quickly. Plus given the savings on games, in a year or too it's wont seem that cheap compared to a PC. Hence why we have these conversations at the release time of a new console, and forget the whole debate 6-12 months down line; it will be less of an issue then when things ballance out.

I like the F1 analogy someone gave. I like to compare PC's and consoles, to motorbikes and car's. Some people like car's, some like bike's and some have both a car and a bike. They have different prices and uses and do somethings better than the other, but bikes wont be replacing cars anytime soon, or visa versa.

But at the end of the day, is value for money not more important that just cost?
If someone said i could by a ford focus for £2000 or a 911 Turbo for £5000, i know what i would buy; the 911 is loads better value for money. And that why im a PC gamer (maybe not forever, but for now anyway).

An as silly as it is though, it's the graphics that 'wow' people. Some people will start moving from the xbox360's to PC's sooner than you think.

CoD2 looks better on my PC than it does on any of the 360's I've played it on.

PGR3 does look immensely nice, but then, being a confined racing game, there isn't much else to render one screen (in any great detail) than the cars themselves so they look disproportionately good compared to other games.

I agree, but this similar topic of discussion happens about once every 2 - 3 weeks, with the same people making the same points over and over again
