    World of Warcraft

Sorry if I am a little vague my info came over the phone yesterday

My son has a new computer and he has been trying to install World of Warcraft.
The major problem is he is in Cornwall and I am in Morecambe he has told me that the game will not install it fails with error 38 whilst installing azeroth maps.

Firstly I told him to copy all the files off his cd’s and run the installation from the HD but it stopped in the same place.
I then told him to run a selective startup he said it got quite far with that approach but then it threw up a crc error.

    The PC is an Imedia
    With a P4 D 2.66
    From PC world about £600
The odd thing is he has successfully installed the game last week on his mum’s laptop?

So I suggested that he should take it back to PC world and let them take a look at it!

    Now comes the funny part
So he and his mum went back to PC world and asked for help and the assistant told them that the CD’s were OK but the PC they had purchased was just a too high spec machine with seventh generation GPU and a game like World of Warcraft was designed for use on a fourth generation GPU and they need to get a patch from blizzard

    Am I missing something here?

    Cheers Agent
    I thought so
I will need to convince his stepdad who i think may be reluctant to allow RD,
he seemed convinced by the advice PC world had fed him.

Thanks ibrien14 I think it is possible to download it from Blizard

I will give them a call tonight and let you know
    Thanks again

You could always have him check that the CDs are nice and clean/not scratched first... Also yep you can download the client from http://teaser.wow-europe.com/ - so long as he logs in through the correct account all will be fine. Finally if he gets really stuck I'll be happy to send down one of my copies so long as he promises to send it back when done!

I have had a lot of installation troubles with WoW, and same with a few mates (in particular, CD 2 and 3)... I find the best way is to make an image at about 4x-8x speed on your harddrive of all the discs, and mount+install from there. Probably the longest method but in my case that was the only method that worked without having to obtain someone else's CD's or downloading the client.

I told him to check and recheck the discs.
Thanks for the link and the kind offer Splash

I think i may get him to DL it first, the optical drive is probably a generic poor quality drive knowing of the shelf PC's considering the game installed on his mums laptop

Cheers unreal it is a possible option as long as the poor drive does not make a bad image

WoW is a completely self-contained install.

If he installed it on the laptop, can he copy the install over a LAN?

I do that regularly, works a charm.

Or maybe if the laptop drive works, install it over LAN from the CD drive?

omg - that advice from PC world really does surprise me...I mean I know they are bad, but that is a downright lie - I would go back to the store and complain to the manager, and threaten to take it further..there is simply no excuse for it. Or phone them up since you are no-where near, if they don't listen then mention trading standards, you would be within your rights..

Best option for fixing it though is definitely to download and install - the installation discs are so far out of date now tha tyou still need to download around 1gig of patches, so a 2gig download for an up-to-date version isn't that bad

Didn't know that, but another option would also be to make an image of the discs (as suggested aove) on the laptop using something like lciso creator, copy the images across the LAN, then mount them on the PC using something like Daemon Tools and install from that. That oughtta do it, though it might be a faff getting this done with him being so far away.
