There are a few games that do make the 360 a worthy buy

    Gears of War
    Test Drive Unlimited
    Call of Duty 3

    To name a few

    nonsense

    Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter
    Project Gotham 3
    Burnout Revenge
    Oblivion
    Gears of War
    Call of Duty 3
    Viva Pinata
    Rainbow 6 Vegas
    FEAR
    Lotr bfme2

I have had hundreds of hours of quality gameplay out of the five i own. AAA games rarely appear within the first year of a console (Apart from on Nintendo and Sega consoles, says it all really)

I personally know 2 people who went out and bought a 360 just for Gears of War... I've got mine but it's officially an xmas present so it's still in its box until then .
The Burnout series is also a good laugh, Elder Scrolls Oblivion is worthy if you haven't got a PC up to spec (mine's not)... and some of the games coming out relatively soon like Mass Effect should also be worth trying out. Also, HD-DVD and HD clip downloads provide another reason to have one.
(Nobody mentioned the Burger King games... if they come out over here and they're similarly cheap - they were $4 in the states - I'd pick them up for a laugh - Sneak King looks so creepy you'd get a few quids worth of laughs from it.)
The funny thing is that some of those saying there's no worthwhile games are dribbling over the prospect of the Playstation 3, when it's still a case of wait and see to see how good most of the up-coming games are... and when many games will be dual-format and using much the same graphics for the 360 and PS3, which would give the advantage to the cheaper system - i.e. the 360.
I held off getting a 360 for a while because the launch games weren't compelling enough, but since then things have got a lot more interesting. That said, I'd be tempted to get a Playstation 3 set up as a Linux workstation (as much as that may be considered sacrilege by some).

The Xbox 360 is worth it for Gears Of War alone but I would say that with the best looking Xbox 360 games you do require a HDTV to really appreciate it's graphics as on a normal TV most Xbox 360 games look as though they could have been done on an Xbox (which is more of a compliment of the original Xbox than a dig at the 360). Having said that i'm still holding off for a while longer but I think i'll end up getting a 360, possibly when Forza Motorsport 2 comes out!
