xmas sales of the wii in japan: 279,277 units.

and again (wii launch week): 4,053/31,436/350,358

how about we go far enough back to well before the wii or ps3 even feature. it sells well then, right? 11th-17th sept 2006 sales: 928 360s, 34,189 ps2's, 134,885 ds lites.

the 360 isn't selling in japan.

figures i read recently (but irritatingly cannot find on the interwebnet) suggested almost 80% of japanese gamers simply wouldn't consider a 360, regardless of price or other factors.

japan is an enormous market. less than 500,000 units a year (give or take) isn't worth getting out of bed for.

no disrespect to microsoft, but the japanese simply aren't interested in the 360, and that's a million-consoles-a-month market being missed out on, with some of the most tallented developers in the world

I think people are forgetting that it's (last I heard) a scaler. I've not really seen many reports about just how good a scaler it is yet so why all the fuss as if it's the best thing ever found in a console ?

I appreciate the PS3 seems to have some scaling problems but that doesn't mean ANA is a total solution.

I wonder if the ANA chip is as good as some of the scalers in today's "trueHD" TV's which will scale up your 720 output to their native res rather happily anyway.

Japan is quite advanced technologically though. I think its more an issue of them hating American companies and America in general rather than disdain for foreign tech.

I think the real reason is less distrust/dislike of foreign stuff, and far more just that foreign companies still don't 'get' Japan.

They get Japan, its the same as over here, they buy games and consoles and then play them. Its the Japanese themselves, they like what they like, and they like Japanese things. Manga, Anime, cartoons with robots fighting, and other cartoons with people with blue and purple hair in them.

They don't really like the 360, or Microsoft, so they don't buy it.
