    Mildly Frauded :(

Quite ironic after me ridiculing that spam email the other day!

Anyway, i posted this in the shopneo thread

"I just checked my balance and there was a payment to TABLETONSA.com for £25 and CC LONDON for £8. Other payments have come out but arent showing on the online banking yet.

I googled TABLETONSA.com and the moneysavingexpert thread about shopneo came up, now the odd thing is, I havent bought anything from shopneo ever.

I've just been back through 2 months of transactions and it seems that they only started yesterday.

I used my card at a post office counter and at scan yesterday, and thats it.

Ive cancelled the card now, but still, its not good.

The only other transactions in the days before are for paypal, and over-clock.co.uk. and tesco.com.

Is anyone able to see any pattern to this?

I'm wondering if a credit card clearing server has been hacked?

Yep, its not paypal, the payments are debit card payments, one is the London congestion charge, and the other is some gambling site I think.

I did use paypal yesterday, but it was misco and they are legit, so I dunno what has happened there

Pretty sure the congestion charge is tracked by number plate, so you might be able to get them back there.

Claim the moeny back from the bank. As much as they may lie to you, you are not respobsible for paying for fraudulent use of your card, provided you have been careful with it and used it in accordance with the banking code as a guideline.

    It gets weirder.

The TABLETONSA.com payment was made in Luxembourg, so they have refunded that right away.

The CC LONDON payment was made in person by chip and pin I have to claim the money for that back by filling in a fraud form etc.

Looks like my card was cloned.

Its a bit worrying, because if it was an online payment, how can they clone the chip and pin?

If it is a cash machine scam, why was the payment made in Luxembourg

Only £33 quid total, so no real harm done, more an inconvenience and a bit of paranoia about how it happened.

maybe the skimmer didn't want to use it, so sold you're details to a card-cloner, who then gave details to a contact in luxembourg? Just theorising

Is it a new card? Skimmers usually wait a while before using you're details so you dont really know where you were skimmed. They might even skim your card, but not put the transaction through on your card, but put their own money in the til. That way, theres no record of the transaction, and you're cards been skimmed.

No mate, its about 18 months old.

So, am I right in thinking that from an online transaction, there is no way that they could make a chip and pin clone of your card, even if they were to hack the card server?

pin data isn't stored on the card, so i dont think thats possible from an online transaction. However, if you put ur card in a hacked C&P machine, then it can log your entry.

So, it could be a hacked chip and pin machine in a shop, as well as a cashpoint that has been rigged?

That narrows it down quite a lot because I dont often use it to buy stuff offline.

    Cheers

np but just remember, that it could be anywhere in the last 18 months that the cards been used, they've just been squatting your details.
Just be sure to always get a receipt with transactions, to make sure its been paid on your card. Thats about the only protection you can get, as hacked C&P's look exactly the same, even that one that plays tetris
