Going away this weekend to Newcastle

Anyone ever had a night out there? me and a bunch of mates are spending 2 nights out there for the nightlife. I have a few questions though.

    Whats it like?

    What are the people like?

    Price of drinks?

Clubs/Bars to goto, bearing in mind I like a variety of music.

Whats the Premier Travel Inn at Quayside like? (thats where were booked)

    Any other recommendations/warnings...?

    Thanks
    Martin

Newcastle's great. Used to live in Sunderland for ten years, and many a happy day and night spent deep in Geordie land.

People are top. Very friendly. Unless you're a southener. In which case don't go.

Price of drinks? Fairly cheap from what I remember, but the big pubs and clubs will drain your wallet as quick as any.

Premier Travel Inn's are usually pretty decent. Can't speak for that one in particular, but I've stayed at a few and never had a complaint. If you've got breakfast included, try to drag yourself out of bed for it, as they do a decent spread.

As for clubs and pubs, it's been too long since I was up there last to be able to say. Sure someone else will be more up to date....

Well there is always digital..... near to the train station and is always busy, there is also World Head Quaters, Blu Bambu/Sam Jacks (mind you probs will get rnb in there)

Pubs.....I always reccomend rafferties (up the side alley next to subway when you get out of the station) for a bit of rock (just be sure to go in the young people bit lol)

the premier travel inn isnt bad, its about walking distance from the city centre too (its quite near some uni H.O.R.)

I might as well chip in as I am a regular out on the toon.

I would deffo recommend Shindig @ Digital on Saturday.

    http://www.shindiguk.com/

7th April - Shindig and Ministry of sound presents, the sessions.

To be honest, the rest of the clubs are not great if you want to go on the pull your gonna end up in the cheesy places like Baja (Gateshead Quayside) or Blu Bambu (bigg market) (only been once, I was drunk enough on free beer to enjoy it tbh...).

One club I have not been to yet is called the Cosmic ballroom and I hear its good, particularly on trance nights.

As for pubs and clubs, its better to just talk about areas to go. For ladies it might well be worth heading to Osbourne road in Jesmond for a few before heading on to a club in town. Its right near a metro station but i would suggest just jumping in taxis.

The station area is quite civilised nad has a few nice bars including Gotham town (rock bar most nights IIRC), the Bigg market is pretty ropey and full of charvas. The Gate is like an indoor boozing shopping centre and could be worth a look if it rains. Also you have the Quayside that is fairly near where you are staying.

Couple of taxi numbers for ya : Blue Line 0191 2626666 Dean Taxi 0191 4444444

    Hope that helps.

Drinks prices vary wildly from club to club, it all depends what you find expensive. As with most larger places you have loads of specials and you have two distinct areas, the quayside and central newcastle and that tends to focus round the big market, it's something of an aquired taste...

Avoid the boat (Tuxedo Princess) as it's overated and the main source of entertainment is watching drunk people with one foot on the revolving dance floor and one foot off trying to work out what the hell is going on... If you are into rock then stick your head in Trillians

If you want summit to eat and like Chinease/Mongolian food then Kubla Kahn's (0191 2212203) do cracking all you can eat buffet's but don't bank on being able to drink much afterwards you'll be stuffed. If you want something to eat when you get off the train/before you head home then Gotham Towns food is actually surprisingly good and as said it's right opposite the station.

A bit unrelated, but has Newcastle still got the brilliantly named chinese restaurant near St James Park called "Wok this way"?

Wok this way is still there Tom

The Premier Travel Inn is situated right near the bars. Newcastle is mainly split into 5 (and more) drinking areas.

Listed in order nearest to your hotel:
    Quayside
    Bigg market
    Central station
    The Gate
    Haymarket

Just ask someone and they will give you directions.

People are friendly and quite sociable as long as you don't go around hurling abuse about Newcastle United

Drinks cost the same as any other main city - quite expensive, but there are quite a few cheaper bars like 'The Quayside Bar' (lloyds bar), Wetherspoons - central station).

    Don't get too drunk

Don't mention Sunderland, and you'll have a great time.

I'm going down to Newcastle myself this weekend for a Jimmy Carr gig. Not quite the same tbh

remember to wear the proper dress code while in newcastle ,
the preferred option is a red and white vertical striped shirt
perfect for ending the night in the rvi
